Nonemployer Statistics

Nonemployer Statistics summarizes the number of establishments and sales or receipts of companies with no paid employees. These nonemployers are typically self-employed individuals or partnerships operating businesses that they have not chosen to incorporate. (Self-employed owners of incorporated businesses typically pay themselves wages or salary, so that the business is an employer.)

Because payroll tax records are at the heart of the Census Bureau's system for keeping track of businesses between censuses, nonemployers do not get census questionnaires and are not reflected in any of the other Core Business Statistics reports or detailed sector-specific reports. (Nonemployers are, however, included in "all firms" totals in reports on minority- and women-owned business.)

In terms of sales or receipts, nonemployers account for roughly 3% of business activity.

At the same time nonemployers account for nearly 3/4 of all businesses. Most nonemployer businesses are very small, and many are not the primary source of income for their owners.

Transportation Annual Survey

Prior to 1996 this report was known as the Motor Freight Transportation and Warehousing Survey. A new sample was introduced for 1996 and businesses were asked to provide data for two consecutive years, 1995 and 1996. The additional year of data was used to "link" the estimates derived from the new and old samples.

This survey represents all employer firms with one or more establishments that are engaged in commercial motor freight transportation and public warehousing services. Statistics in this report are summarized by kind-of-business classification.

This report provides detailed estimates of operating revenues and expenses for the for-hire trucking and public warehousing industries, as well as inventories of revenue-generating freight equipment for the trucking industry at the United States level. The survey excludes private motor-freight carriers that operate as auxillary establishments to nontransportation companies and independent owner-operators with no paid employees.

Current and previous year estimates and estimates of year-to year percentage change are shown, along with estimated coefficient of variation for dollar volume estimates and year-to-year ratios.

Data are adjusted for seasonal variations and, in the case of sales, for trading-day differences.
