Background

TIAA-CREF is a financial services organization specializing in retirement services to 3.7 million customers in the academic, research, medical and cultural fields. As a leader in the efficiency field, TIAA-CREF has committed to a Better Buildings Challenge goal of reducing energy consumption in 35 million square feet by 20% by 2020.

Participation in the Better Building's Challenge is providing a forum for TIAA-CREF to share its successes for others to learn from and replicate. In addition to driving comprehensive, building wide upgrades, TIAA-CREF is also committed to continually improving buildings that have already been upgraded. As an example, 99 High Street, a central business district high rise office tower (pictured), showcases TIAA-CREF’s commitment to identifying ways to improve already high-performing buildings. Work includes lighting, HVAC, and plumbing projects with short payback periods, and which are expected to increase the ENERGY STAR rating from its current level of 87 up to a new level of 90. This project reflects TIAA-CREF’s on-going effort to identify and capture no-cost/low-cost opportunities across their portfolio of real estate.
