20% Reduction in Energy Intensity

Background

North Smithfield is an agricultural suburb on the Massachusetts border with 11,700 residents. North Smithfield is committed to reducing energy intensity by 20% in its buildings portfolio between 2010 and 2020, mainly by installing more efficient equipment and new intelligent control systems. With elected Town Administrator Paulette Hamilton, North Smithfield has pursued an integrated Green Community policy. The town has high performance rates in recycling, energy conservation and environmental programs. More than 500 volunteers participate in Clean & Green Day each April.

North Smithfield has and will continue to pursue energy services contracting as its core method of energy intensity reduction. Future projects may include redevelopment of an existing school administration building site as part of an Energy Star rated municipal offices complex.
