Background

The Super 8 Ukiah is the only certified eco-friendly hotel in Ukiah, CA. This franchised property is a member of the Wyndham Hotel Group Green Advisory board and has been a leader in adopting sustainable practices. It has recently decided to encourage low emission vehicles by installing an electrical vehicle charging station and providing preferred parking spaces for guests.

Solutions

The electric vehicle charging station is the first charging station for hotel guests in Ukiah/Mendocino County. The rooms and building insulation systems have been updated with eco-friendly materials, and the cleaning staff uses green cleaning supplies. Most of the electrical equipment has been replaced with ENERGY STAR appliances, and all interior lighting has been upgraded to CFLs. The exterior lighting of the building was replaced with Metal Halide lights with 40/80w induction bulbs, taking advantage of a 60% rebate from the utility company.

Other Benefits

As a result of the energy efficiency measures implemented, the ENERGY STAR score for this property was raised from a 56 in 2006 to an 85 in 2011, and the property received the ENERGY STAR Label in 2012. In addition, the property is pursuing both LEED® Certification and Green Key Certification.

Super 8 Ukiah’s commitment to sustainability is even further solidified with their platinum certification by the Green Business Bureau and listing on Travelocity as well as AAA’s green hotel listings.

Background

Not only does the Ukiah Super 8 implement initiatives, but it also encourages sustainable practices by having weekly training for employees. Guests are encouraged to participate in green initiatives via signage posted throughout the property as well as in guest rooms. The property also participates in a “go local program” which sponsors local community programs.

Solutions

The Super 8 Ukiah was acquired in September 2005, and since that time hotel ownership has incorporated the following energy efficiency measures:

  • Exterior changes made in January 2006.
  • Upgraded main occupant areas, bathrooms, lobby and lights in May 2006.
  • Insulated hotel, upgraded 60 doors and frames, and added new HVAC installations, starting in March 2011.

Charts represent savings achieved since March 2011.
