Background

The Albertsons Carpinteria remodel is a significant energy efficiency project for SUPERVALU and the supermarket industry as a whole, in that it is the first US supermarket to demonstrate a HFC-free, all-natural refrigerant, refrigeration system. The HFC-free system not only affords greater energy savings but also eliminates all potential global warming associated with life-cycle leaking of greenhouse gases.

Solutions

Through its showcase project, SUPERVALU expects annual energy savings at the Albertsons Carpinteria store to be 30% lower than that of a traditional store, with annual energy cost reductions of approximately $100,000, and zero direct greenhouse gas emissions from the refrigeration system.

Other Benefits

SUPERVALU’s significant financial investment in the Carpinteria remodel will better serve its customers. The store size was more than doubled to include a full-service Bakery and in-house Pharmacy, also creating additional jobs in the local Carpinteria area. Many of the lessons learned from this project are being incorporated into all SUPERVALU new and remodel projects and will drive energy reductions and environmental improvements far beyond this one project.

Background

The overall net effect is a drastic reduction in life-cycle Total Equivalent Warming Impact (TEWI) verses traditional refrigeration systems. The energy reduction addresses the Indirect Component of TEWI while the HFC-free refrigeration design addresses the Direct Component of TEWI.

The Albertsons Carpinteria store was originally an 18,850 square foot supermarket. In order to meet the demands of the local marketplace, SUPERVALU has increased the size of the store to 40,200 square feet through the remodel process while still managing to reduce energy usage on a per square foot basis.

Solutions

In addition to the HFC-free refrigeration system, the SUPERVALU showcase project utilizes skylights and 100% LED lighting for use on the sales floor, refrigerated and freezer cases, as well as parking lot lighting. Additional energy-efficient technologies include the use of doors on refrigerated merchandisers that traditionally would be open display cases.
