Background

Portland Public School District, founded in 1851, is an urban k-12 school district located in Portland, Oregon. Serving approximately 47,000 students in 81 schools, it is the largest school district in the Pacific Northwest. The District manages 105 educational and support facilities comprising over 9 million square feet and more than 6,000 employees. Responsible for the second largest acreage of property in the City just after Portland Parks and Recreation, the District manages a significant portfolio of Portland’s public buildings.

As a Better Buildings Challenge Partner, Portland Public School District is committing to a 20% energy reduction goal by 2020 and will be working across all of the 105 facilities totaling over 9 million square feet to improve energy efficiency under the Challenge. Portland Public Schools will strive to maximize energy savings and building energy efficiency by making effective and strategic use of Oregon’s SB1149 energy efficiency funds, recovery zone bonds, state and federal energy incentives and rebates, energy savings performance contracts, behavioral conservation, and a focus on improved building operations.
