Background

At over 150 years old, Michigan State University (MSU) is the pioneer land-grant university in the United States. In the fall of 2011, MSU enrolled nearly 48,000 students from all 50 states and more than 125 countries. MSU has committed to decrease energy use across their campus, utilizing a strategy that profiles individual buildings and identifies upgrade opportunities.

MSU is engaged in developing a set of building profiles across 110 buildings that approximates 80% of the square footage in its building portfolio. These profiles will enable the university to identify a select set of facilities that will benefit most from implementation of retro-commissioning. The profiles will guide future actions to modify and improve building systems and achieve energy reduction of more than 20% by the year 2020.
