Background

As Delaware’s most populated county, New Castle County is home to 540,000 residents and covers 426 square miles.

New Castle County has already taken substantial measures to reduce energy use. Through the Smart Energy Program, the County has installed energy savings measures in 21 buildings and installed two solar arrays on facility roofs. All buildings built in the last five years have been constructed using energy efficient principles, and future buildings will also be designed and built to maximize energy efficiency. The County has plans to develop solar facilities on a former landfill site and on other land owned by the County.
