Challenge Commitment

1.63 million Square Feet

Goal

20% Reduction in Energy Intensity by 2020

Background

Established by Charter in 1793, the Town of East Hartford is located on the east bank of the Connecticut River. With affordable housing, great neighborhoods, strong schools and a central location, East Hartford is a thriving community with an exceptional quality of life, rich in cultural and recreational resources.

East Hartford is taking a "Town-wide" approach to energy efficiency. Through its participation in the Better Buildings Challenge, East Hartford will establish a Town-wide energy use benchmark and will improve the energy intensity of its portfolio at least 20% by 2020. To reach this goal, East Hartford will engage in energy performance contracts as well as address priority projects like replacing streetlights, installing energy efficient windows at a local middle school, and incorporating energy efficiency measures in a library expansion project. The Town will also communicate strategies to local private sector stakeholders, working closely with them to fulfill the goals of the Better Buildings Challenge.
