Starbucks Coffee Company

Challenge Commitment

14 Million Square Feet

Goal

25% Reduction in Energy Intensity by 2015

Background

Starbucks Coffee Company offers some of the world's finest fresh-roasted whole bean coffees. Starbucks is committed to reducing its energy consumption across nearly 18,000 stores in 60 countries.

The energy used to power Starbucks stores, offices and roasting plants accounts for more than 80 percent of the company’s direct carbon footprint. As such, Starbucks is focused on multiple fronts to reduce energy use. Starbucks has seen its electricity use decrease by a total of 7.5 percent since 2008, and by partnering with the DOE through the Better Buildings Challenge, it is working cooperatively on solutions that will bring the organization closer to its goal of reducing company-owned store energy consumption 25% by 2015.
