Social Security Benefits for Widows, Widowers & Other Survivors

When a person who has worked and paid Social Security taxes dies, certain members of the family may be eligible for survivors benefits. Up to ten years of work is needed to be eligible for benefits, depending on the person's age at the time of death.

Survivor Benefits

The Defense Finance and Accounting Service (DFAS) provides answers to many questions about the Survivor Benefit Plan (SPB), the Reserve Component Survivor Benefit Plan (RCSBP), the Retired Serviceman's Family Protection Plan (RSFPP) and other annuity programs and Voluntary Separation Incentive (VSI) payments to beneficiaries.

VA Benefits for Survivors

Provides information on survivor benefits including Dependency & Indemnity Compensation (DIC), a tax-free benefit for the surviving spouse and dependent children. A spouse's Survivor Benefits Plan (SBP) annuity is reduced by any DIC amount received. Other benefits include Survivors' and Dependents' Educational Assistance Program, home loan assistance, burial benefits, life insurance settlement and financial counseling, vocational rehabilitation and education program refunds.

VA Retroactive Payment for Deceased Veterans

Press release published in December 2008 announcing VA's actions to quickly identify and pay surviving spouses who are eligible to receive a one-time compensation or pension payment for the month of the Veteran's death. Surviving spouses should contact the Survivors Call Center at 1-800-749-8387.
