Yellowstone to Waive Entrance Fee on National Public Lands Day
All National Park Service sites, including Yellowstone National Park, will offer free visitor admission on Saturday, September 27, in honor of National Public Lands Day.  All Entrance fees, including commercial tour entrance fees and transportation entrance fees, will be waived on this day.  A seven-day pass to Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks is normally $25 for a private, non-commercial vehicle.

The Grand Loop Road between Fishing Bridge and Mud Volcano reopened to traffic at noon Friday.  Visitors will be required to travel through the area without stopping.  There could be temporary traffic delays of up to ten minutes as helicopters continue to fly over the area and drop water on the fire.

Firefighters Make Progress on LeHardy Fire Thursday
Lighter winds and additional firefighters resulted in a day of significant progress on the LeHardy Fire in Yellowstone National Park. Mapping conducted after a late Thursday afternoon reconnaissance flight has resulted in a revised, lower fire size estimate of 505 acres. Spring Plowing to Begin in Yellowstone
With the impending arrival of spring comes the end of the winter season and over-the-snow travel in Yellowstone National Park.  Park roads will begin to close to snowmobiles and snowcoaches in preparation for spring plowing.  Beginning at 9:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 2, groomed roads from Mammoth to Norris will be closed, followed by the closure of Norris to Madison and Norris to Canyon at 9:00 p.m., on Tuesday, March 4.  All remaining groomed roads will close to oversnow vehicles at 9:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 9.

2007-08 Winter Count of Northern Yellowstone Elk
The Northern Yellowstone Cooperative Wildlife Working Group conducted its annual winter survey of the northern Yellowstone elk population on February 14, 2008.  A total of 6,279 elk were counted during good survey conditions.  Approximately one-third of the observed elk were located within Yellowstone National Park, and two-thirds were located north of the park boundary.  Biologists used four fixed-wing aircraft to count elk through the entire northern range during the one-day survey.  The northern Yellowstone elk herd winters between the northeast entrance of Yellowstone National Park and Dome Mountain/Dailey Lake in the Paradise Valley.

Bison Management Operations Continue Near Gardiner
The Stephens Creek bison capture facility northwest of Gardiner, Montana, and inside the northern boundary of Yellowstone National Park, has been open and operating since Friday, February 8.  The facility is operated under the Interagency Bison Management Plan (IBMP). During the past week, several small groups of bison have repeatedly moved through the Stephens Creek area toward or across the park boundary, where cattle graze on private land.  Under the IBMP, the park works with other agencies to conserve a viable, wild bison population while cooperating to protect Montana’s brucellosis-free status.  That means keeping bison separated from cattle present on land outside the park.

Rockefeller, Jr. Memorial Parkway was published in the Federal Register today.  The rule becomes effective on Wednesday, December 19, 2007, allowing the parks to open for the winter 2007-2008 season on that day as scheduled.

With the opening of hunting seasons on lands surrounding Yellowstone National Park, hunters are reminded that hunting is not permitted within the park.  Though most of the park boundary is well marked, it is the responsibility of the hunters to ensure they do not hunt within the park.

Emergency Closures Lifted
Yellowstone National Park and Gallatin National Forest Lift Emergency Closures Effective at midnight tonight, Yellowstone National Park and the Gallatin National Forest will lift emergency area closures temporarily put in place north of Gardiner in the Reese Creek area in Yellowstone National Park and Beattie Gulch area on the Gallatin National Forest. Columbine Fire Fact Sheet for August 16
Yesterday’s Activities: The East Entrance Road remains closed due to increased fire activity and safety concerns. The fire activity increased in the late afternoon and spotted to the east into Canfield Creek and Cabin Creek. Single tree and group tree torching were reported. A smaller spot fire was located in a scree slope in the top third of Cabin Creek. By early evening, the fire was well-established in the top third of Canfield Creek, triggering a pre-evacuation alert for residents from Pahaska Tepee to the Boy Scout Camp near Kitty Creek. Fire operations staff worked with the Park County Sheriff and the Shoshone National Forest to inform residents. The spot fire near Middle Creek was kept in check with helicopter water bucket drops. An infrared flight was flown late in the evening to evaluate the change in the fire perimeter. Firefighters focused on structure protection. Sprinklers, hose lays and pumps are prepped at many of the structures to enhance the level of protection, should the fire progress towards the developments.

Did You Know?
There were no wolves in Yellowstone in 1994. The wolves that were reintroduced in 1995 and 1996 thrived and there are now over 300 of their descendents living in the Greater Yellowstone Area.
