Plans have been approved for a new wastewater treatment plant for the Madison area of Yellowstone National Park.
An environmental assessment (EA) for the proposed project was released for public review last fall. No substantive comments were received. The Finding of No Significant Impact (FONSI) which allows for construction of the project was recently signed.
The existing plant, built in 1959, serves the Madison campground, picnic area and employee housing area. The aging plant can’t handle anticipated future needs, is at risk of failure, and doesn’t meet current wastewater treatment standards.
The new treatment plant will be built on a previously disturbed site west of Madison Junction next to the current facility and out of public view. Most of the existing plant will be removed once the new wastewater treatment plan goes into service.
Start of construction and the estimated total cost of the project are both dependent upon funding availability.
A copy of the EA and the FONSI are available on the National Park Service Planning, Environmental and Public Comment (PEPC) web site at http://parkplanning.nps.gov.
