What will this project accomplish?

Launched in November 2004, and funded through a CWA §319(h) NPS Grant, TSSWCB has initiated a pilot project providing guidance and technical assistance to local stakeholder groups in developing and implementing Watershed Protection Plans (WPPs) in southeast and south central Texas. The project workplan (PDF, 69 kB) describes how TSSWCB's Wharton Regional Watershed Coordinator will serve stakeholder groups in 47 counties comprising 40 Soil and Water Conservation Districts.

A map of counties within the service area will be posted here.

A map of SWCDs within the service area will be posted here.

A map of watersheds within the service area will be posted here.

How are stakeholders involved in this project?

Stakeholder involvement occurs through two different, yet equally crucial, processes in this project.

First, a Regional Watershed Coordination Steering Committee (WCSC), meeting quarterly, is composed of water quality monitoring and improvement partners from across the service area including other state agencies, federal agencies, river authorities, national estuary programs, and councils of governemnts. This WCSC is tasked with steering the project toward achievement of successful WPP implementation by providing guidance and direction to the Regional Watershed Coordinator, most significantly by identifying those watersheds most in need of coordinated watershed protection planning.

Second, after the WCSC directs the Regional Watershed Coordinator to a specific watershed, a stakeholder group composed of individuals with a vested interest in water quality in that watershed will be formed. This local watershed action committee will develop a WPP for their watershed with technical assistance from the Regional Watershed Coordinator.
