Transition Assistance Program
Who is Eligible for this Program?
The Transition Assistance Program is available to the following
members of Team Coast Guard:
- Active Duty, Reservists, Retirees and their spouses
Purpose of Program
The Transition Assistance Program is intended to provide
information and assistance to all separating and retiring members to help
them make an effective transition from military to civilian life. An
integral aspect of this goal is to ensure that separating members are made
aware of, and have access to, the numerous programs and services available
to assist them in the transition process.
Definitions
The following definitions apply to the Transition Assistance Program:
- Transition Assistance Seminar: A seminar which is held regionally throughout the Coast Guard and is coordinated by Work-Life Transition/Relocation Manager (TRM). The seminars contain information such as interviewing techniques, resume writing, job search techniques, and veteran benefits.
- Transition Services: Effective 1 October 1994, all members within 180 days of separation or retirement are eligible for transition services as described in enclosure (1) of COMDTINST 1900.2 Eligibility for services is not affected by length or character of service.
- Transition Benefits: Effective 1 October 1994, certain involuntarily separated members are eligible for transition benefits described in enclosure (2) of COMDTINST 1900.2. Eligibility for transition benefits depends on the nature and characterization of a member's discharge. In general, members must meet the following conditions to be eligible for benefits: (a) were on active duty after 30 September 1994; (b) were or will be involuntarily separated between 1 October and 31 December 2001; and (c) were or will be discharged under conditions characterized as either honorable or general under honorable conditions. Specific eligibility criteria for benefits are provided in enclosure (3) of COMDTINST 1900.2.
- Preseparation Counseling: A command representative will meet with all separating, retiring or entering the Disability Evaluation System, officers and enlisted, approximately 180 days before separation and not later than 15 days after official notification of separation. This will be documented using DD Form 2648 (Pre-Separation Counseling Checklist) and submitted for entry in the member's permanent record.
- Pre-Separation Guide: A handbook developed by the USCG TRMs to assist members in the separation from the service by providing useful information.

- As an International Career Coach, each TRM will contribute to career transition success by offering a variety of results oriented programs. By incorporating career assessment tools and techniques, exploring job and career options, focusing on immediate job objectives and long term career goals via individual or group self assessments, employee development plans and transition plans, you will be able to identify individual attributes, plan an effective and workable career strategy and receive appropriate feedback on real career issues, options and barriers

Transition/Relocation Manager at your Work-Life Staff.
Work-Life Staffs are located at Integrated Support Commands CG-wide and the
Headquarters Support Command.
Related Program Information
Each Transition/Relocation Manager can assist active duty members in
scheduling a Transition Assistance Seminar. This seminar is intended to
assist transitioning active duty members in preparing for the civilian job
market. Spouses of active duty members are highly encouraged to attend,
however travel funding is not provided. These seminars cover such topics as
resume writing, interviewing techniques, salary negotiations, and successful
attire strategies. Each seminar will also familiarize the member with the
benefits they may be entitled to as a separatee or retiree.
