- Avian Influenza Health Alert - "Positive test reactions to H5 Avian Influenza has been detected in wild migratory ducks in Manitoba and Quebec." They are attempting to do N-type testing. Canada is sampling birds along migratory flight paths in seven provinces. At present there is "no evidence of influenza-related illness among domestic or wild birds in the test areas." For more information, see the Canadian Avian Influenza website. Additional information on minimizing any potential risks from wild birds can be found here.

Health Advisory for Rabies -
The CDC working together with the Mississippi Department of Health confirmed a diagnosis
of rabies as the cause of death in a Mississippi child. This
advisory
provides information on the case, update, and criteria for conducting risk assessments
to determine need for post exposure prophylaxis.

Flu Recommendations
- To ensure that those who are at highest risk of complications
from influenza have access to vaccine this season, CDC
recommends
that people in certain priority groups receive inactivated influenza vaccine
(i.e., the "flu shot") until October 24, 2005.

Interim Immunization Recommendations for Individuals Displaced by Hurricane Katrina
- Influenza vaccination is recommended for all people 6 months of age and older who have been
displaced by hurricane Katrina and are living in crowded group settings. There are
specific
recommendations on how to vaccinate evacuees based on availability of their medical
and immunization records or lack there of.

Hurricane Katrina Aftermath at Nasa Facilities - Hurricane Katrina brought severe disruptions to the greater New Orleans area. Our thoughts go out
to our co-workers and their families at Stennis Space Center in southern Mississippi and the
Michoud Assembly Facility in New Orleans who have suffered such devastating losses. The NASA
Employee Assistance Program (EAP) offers support for employees facing conflict and disruption in
their lives. Any employee or immediate family member of the Michoud Assembly Facility or Stennis
Space Center can access our after hours EAP number: 1-888-807-7997. Until further notice, these
employees and their immediate families can contact any NASA EAP listed in the
Directory of this website for EAP assistance.
When the FEMA disaster assessments are complete, we will be offering additional EAP support to
the NASA family there. One aspect of the NASA EAP program is Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM)
which is intended to assist employees after the disaster event. As soon as the initial evaluations of
the physical situation at our affected facilities are completed, we will offer CISM support. Health
Information related to hurricanes in general, as well as, Hurricane Katrina and its recovery efforts
can be found here.

Weight Management Plans as Compared to the 2005 USDA Dietary Guidelines
- NASA's OCHMO
has developed this pamphlet/flyer to help increase awareness
and knowledge among NASA employees of important factors related to weight management.
Permanent weight management is about more than just the food we eat; rather, it includes what,
why, how and when we eat. Eight of the more popular plans have been presented here as a comparison
to the 2005 USDA Dietary Guidelines recommendations for daily nutritional intake.
This document is available as either a tri-fold pamphlet or a flyer.

CDC Adopts New Mosquito Repellent Guidelines - The CDC has released
new guidelines
about mosquito repellents available to protect workers and others from mosquito-borne diseases
such as West Nile Virus.

NASA and IHS sign agreement to develop EHRS - The Indian Health Service, an
agency of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, has signed a memorandum of understanding
to share the Resource and Patient Management System, a suite of applications which includes an
electronic health record, with NASA. This transfer of technology will be specifically used to develop
the NASA EHRS. The
memorandum of understanding
was signed April 21, 2005.

2005 - 06 Influenza Season - The CDC has met with influenza vaccine manufacturers
to develop supply projections and distribution strategies, including advance ordering and partial
shipment to those customers who prebook. As of March 25, 2005, the supply of inactivated influenza
vaccine projected for the priority group appeared adequate. If more vaccine becomes available,
additional groups can also be targeted for vaccination.

- The U.S. Surgeon General, Richard Carmona, Issues New National Health Advisory on Radon - Today the Surgeon General of the United States issued a Health Advisory warning Americans about the health risk from exposure to radon in indoor air. The Nation's Chief Physician urged Americans to test their homes to find out how much radon they might be breathing. Dr. Carmona also stressed the need to remedy the problem as soon as possible when the radon level is 4 pCi/L or more. Diabetes and Cardiovascular Disease Information - The CDC analyzed
self-report data from the 1999-2001 National Health Interview Survey (NHIS). The findings
in this report indicate that the age-adjusted prevalence of reported heart disease and stroke is
approximately two to three times greater among persons with diabetes than among persons without diabetes.

Insufficient scientific evidence to recommend vitamin supplements as a way to prevent cancer or heart disease
The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) concludes that the evidence is insufficient to recommend for or against the use of supplements of vitamins A, C, or E; multivitamins with folic acid; or antioxidant combinations for the prevention of cancer or cardiovascular disease.
