Workshops

The Center for Learning & Development (CLD) offers various workshops throughout the year on teaching and learning topics. Broadly, there are three types of workshops, each of which is described below.

Registration

You can register for CLD workshops through the EIS Portal which will allow you to track and keep all your training record for future retrieval. Please follow the directions below to register for this workshop:

    1. Log-in to the EIS Portal (https://my.unt.edu/psp/papd01/EMPLOYEE/EMPL/h/?tab=HS_GUEST)
    2. At the top select the Human Resources tab
    3. On the left side menu – scroll to the bottom and select the Request Training Enrollment link (**Be patient it takes a few seconds for the screen to populate**)
    4. Select Search by Course Number
    5. Enter HP12 in the search field and then click Search, all the CLD workshops should appear as search result.
    6. Choose the workshops of your interest and follow the prompts from there to complete registration

CLD Workshops

These CLD workshops are open to all UNTHSC faculty. The workshops address a variety of teaching & learning topics based on specific faculty and school needs. To accommodate different schedules, most workshops will each be offered at two different times. Listed below is fall 2012 CLD workshop schedule. This hands-on lab is for new and beginner-level Blackboard Learn users. You will get to know the interface, site navigation, content upload, and available features of Blackboard to get you started.

First Steps of Planning a Course or Lecture

Seminar

Whether it is planning a course or a lecture, there are some essential principles that can help you plan and deliver your course or lecture more effectively. This workshop will introduce you to backward design, an important principle in instructional design. The workshop will also demonstrate the importance of learning objectives and share the best practices in writing effective, measurable objectives. You are encouraged to bring your own course/lecture learning objectives and other materials for discussion and feedback.

Strategies to Assess Large Classes

Seminar

Large classes typically rely heavily on multiple-choice tests because of their efficiency and economy of scale. This workshop will discuss ways in which these structured assessments can be enhanced to provide formative information for faculty and feedback to students for reflection and deeper learning.

Seminar

Analysis of student responses to multiple-choice items is a valuable skill for all faculty members. This workshop will introduce basic psychometric principles to help with item analysis. A simple spreadsheet and practical guidelines will be used to find "bad" items.

Using Turnitin to Facilitate Paper Grading and Peer Review

Hands-on Lab

Turnitin is known as a tool to address plagiarism, but it also facilitates rich, meaningful feedback that improves students' writing skills, promotes critical thinking, and streamlines grading. This workshop will address all of these features of Turnitin.

Team Based Learning Basics

Team Based Learning (TBL) is an innovative form of collaborative learning that uses a sequence of individual work, group work and immediate feedback to enhance students’ critical thinking and motivation to learn. It has been increasingly used by the schools across UNTHSC. This workshop is for beginners to TBL. Questions addressed include: What is TBL? How is it different from other forms of small group learning? What do students say about TBL? How do I go about conducting a TBL class?

Approaches to Effective and Efficient Assessment and Grading

Seminar

Do you often ask students to present, demonstrate, articulate, or apply their knowledge, yet are not so sure how to assess it? This workshop will introduce you to techniques like rubrics and checklists that facilitate consistent grading and provide helpful feedback to students.

Tips to Make Your Lecture More Engaging

Students learn best when they are actively engaged in information gathering, deep thinking and problem solving. What are the ways to promote active learning in a lecture class? This workshop will share a few quick tips that can help make your lecture more engaging.

Promoting Veteran Student Success on Campus

Lunch & Learn

As the number of veteran students increases at UNTHSC, it is important for faculty and staff to have the tools and resources to best serve this population. This workshop will provide a comprehensive understanding of the unique needs of veteran students on the UNTHSC campus, and discuss the available services and strategies that will assist veteran students in being successful both inside and outside of the classroom.

Creating and Facilitating Online Discussions

Seminar

MMeaningful online discussions extend learning beyond the time and space limit of the classroom. However, creating a meaningful online discussion is more than setting up a discussion forum in Blackboard. This workshop will focus on best practices in the creation and facilitation of online discussions.

Tips on Test Construction to Assess Higher Order Thinking

Assessing a student’s ability to apply knowledge, analyze information, evaluate alternatives, and create solutions to complex problems is more difficult than assessing the basic knowledge and understanding of concepts. This workshop briefly reviews the levels of higher order thinking and assessment best practices. Workshop participants are encouraged to bring assessment examples from their own classes. Using conceptual and psychometric principles, participants will analyze and modify their assessments in order to improve the quality of the assessments.

Hands-on Lab

This workshop will demonstrate features of Blackboard Learn tools to assist faculty in constructing assessments, creating item banks, and evaluating student performance. Faculty will also learn how to organize test items by learning goal, question type, and difficulty level.

Qualtrics: Advanced Survey Design

Hands-on Lab

Qualtrics is HSC's self-service online survey, reporting and analysis tool available to all faculty, staff and students. This lab will go beyond simple surveys to provide hands-on experience using advanced survey tools, such as conditional item display and branching. Participants should have a basic working knowledge of Qualtrics prior to attending this workshop.

Peer-Wise: A Peer Grading System that Promotes Active Learning

Hands-on Lab

PeerWise is newly available software that supports student construction, explanation, and critique of multiple choice questions in an interactive learning environment. This workshop will introduce participants to the system, provide hands-on examples of how it works, and explain how to sign up for a UNTHSC practice course and get an instructor's license to use the software.

Qualtrics: Reporting and Analysis of Survey Data

Hands-on Lab

Qualtrics is HSC's self-service online survey, reporting and analysis tool. This lab will provide hands-on experience with Qualtrics reporting tools, plus options for more complex data analysis. Participants should have a basic working knowledge of Qualtrics prior to attending this workshop.

Online Educators’ Forum

Lunch & Learn

UNTHSC has recently launched the distance education initiative. Several courses from the School of Public Health and other schools on campus are now being offered online. This Lunch & Learn session will introduce to you important principles of designing online courses. Faculty members of the online courses will also share with you their valuable experience gained from teaching online.

Effective Use of Questions to Promote Students' Higher Order Thinking

Seminar

Effective class teaching depends to a large extent on the questions you ask of students and the types of thinking triggered by these questions. This workshop focuses on the ways to use questioning as an effective way to promote students’ higher order thinking in both classroom and clinical settings. Best practice guidelines will be discussed.

Statistical Analysis for Faculty Researchers

Seminar & Hands-on Lab

This interactive session will (re)introduce statistical concepts typically used by faculty researchers, such as scales of measurement and choosing the correct inferential method for data analysis. SPSS will be used to illustrate the methods presented in class.

Reflection Exercise: What, Why & How

Seminar

Guiding students to thoughtfully reflect on their learning experiences is an excellent way to foster active involvement with a subject and encourage higher order thinking. This workshop will define reflection, examine its benefits, and discuss how you can incorporate reflection in teaching by constructing and assessing reflection exercises systematically and objectively.

Camtasia: A Screen Recording Tool

A workshop on the power and flexibility of the Lecture Capture software Camtasia, a Techsmith product. The instructor will demonstrate how easy it is to create video lectures with PowerPoint and use the powerful post production tools Camtasia offers to bring your videos to life. A great tool for someone who is thinking about creating a flipped classroom. Come take advantage of the demo and tips to give your students even more ways to learn and retain the information you teach them.

Using Copyrighted and Licensed Materials in Teaching at UNTHSC

This session is designed to help faculty understand how they can properly (and legally) use print and electronic material in the classroom. The presentation will include answers to questions including: "Am I allowed to use this work in my class?” “Who owns this work I want to use?” “Do I need to request permission to use this work?” “Has the Library already licensed the work for classroom use? “How do I appropriately label cited work and media?”

 

*Workshop Formats

  • Hands-on lab: Instructor-facilitated session with hands-on activities. Labs typically take place in a computer teaching laboratory. Learning activities may be prepared or ad hoc.
  • Lunch & Learn: Instructor-facilitated presentations and discussions in a conference room setting. Light lunch is served prior to the session.
  • Seminar: Instructor-led interaction in a conference room setting. Seminars typically include presentations, demonstrations, discussions, and sometimes activities.

Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP) Academy of Teaching Scholars Workshops

The QEP Academy of Teaching Scholars workshops are targeted at faculty across the four UNTHSC schools who are participants in UNTHSC’s Quality Enhancement Plan effort. The workshop topics are specifically designed to address the needs identified by participating QEP faculty as well as from university-wide faculty surveys. The workshops are generally held once per month during most months of the year. They are usually offered on Friday mornings. PDF version of the schedule is available for download.
