This workshop will introduce you to backward design, an important principle in instructional design. The workshop will also demonstrate the importance of learning objectives and share the best practices in writing effective, measurable objectives. You are encouraged to bring your own course/lecture learning objectives and other materials for discussion and feedback.

Strategies to Assess Large Classes

Large classes typically rely heavily on multiple-choice tests because of their efficiency and economy of scale. This workshop will discuss ways in which these structured assessments can be enhanced to provide formative information for faculty and feedback to students for reflection and deeper learning.

Analysis of student responses to multiple-choice items is a valuable skill for all faculty members. This workshop will introduce basic psychometric principles to help with item analysis. A simple spreadsheet and practical guidelines will be used to find "bad" items.

Using Turnitin to Facilitate Paper Grading and Peer Review

Team Based Learning (TBL) is an innovative form of collaborative learning that uses a sequence of individual work, group work and immediate feedback to enhance students’ critical thinking and motivation to learn. It has been increasingly used by the schools across UNTHSC. This workshop is for beginners to TBL. Questions addressed include: What is TBL? How is it different from other forms of small group learning? What do students say about TBL? How do I go about conducting a TBL class?

Assessing a student’s ability to apply knowledge, analyze information, evaluate alternatives, and create solutions to complex problems is more difficult than assessing the basic knowledge and understanding of concepts. This workshop briefly reviews the levels of higher order thinking and assessment best practices. Workshop participants are encouraged to bring assessment examples from their own classes. Using conceptual and psychometric principles, participants will analyze and modify their assessments in order to improve the quality of the assessments.

This workshop will demonstrate features of Blackboard Learn tools to assist faculty in constructing assessments, creating item banks, and evaluating student performance. Faculty will also learn how to organize test items by learning goal, question type, and difficulty level.

Qualtrics: Advanced Survey Design

Qualtrics is HSC's self-service online survey, reporting and analysis tool available to all faculty, staff and students. This lab will go beyond simple surveys to provide hands-on experience using advanced survey tools, such as conditional item display and branching. Participants should have a basic working knowledge of Qualtrics prior to attending this workshop.

Peer-Wise: A Peer Grading System that Promotes Active Learning

PeerWise is newly available software that supports student construction, explanation, and critique of multiple choice questions in an interactive learning environment. This workshop will introduce participants to the system, provide hands-on examples of how it works, and explain how to sign up for a UNTHSC practice course and get an instructor's license to use the software.
