The National Council on Disability (NCD) is gathering public input for a study of emerging issues and trends affecting the lives of people with disabilities. Information gathered will be used in the development of NCD's next annual progress report to the President and Congress. The Council is seeking input on disability issues including health, housing, employment, insurance, transportation, assistive technology, recreation, emergency preparedness, early intervention and education. Suggestions should be sent to NCD by July 22, 2008 via email - type "Emerging Trends" in the subject line.

The Deaf and Hard of Hearing in Government (DHHIG) Employment and Technology Forum took place May 1, 2008 in Washington, DC. The Forum consisted of subject matter experts from the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) and the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) and other entities providing presentations in the area of reasonable accommodation, career management and technology advancements.

The Telecommunications and Electronic and Information Technology Advisory Committee (TEITAC) presented its report to the U.S. Access Board on April 3, 2008. The report recommends updates to the Board's Section 508 standards for electronic and information technology and its Telecommunications Act accessibility guidelines.

Conference took place March 10-15, 2008 in Los Angeles, CA. This conference is for people with disabilities, special education teachers, occupational and physical therapists, rehabilitation service providers, assistive technology practitioners and suppliers and others interested in learning how technology can advance the independence of people with disabilities.

A free CAP Training Seminar: Leading the Way with Accommodations was held on February 27, 2008 in Orlando, FL. Topics covered will include the CAP mission, scope and services; an Assistive Technology overview; OPM's Schedule A Hiring Authority for people with disabilities; the Workforce Recruitment Program and the Wounded Service Members Initiative.

The Department of Defense (DoD) Director of the Computer/Electronic Accommodations Program (CAP) Dinah F.B. Cohen received the Service to America Medal (SAMMIES) for leading the world's largest assistive technology program recently. CAP is a centrally-funded assistive technology program that buys and delivers the hardware, software, and services that people with disabilities need to function in the workplace.

Leadership Forum took place January 31 - February 1, 2008 in Orlando, FL. The conference is designed to help large corporations, government agencies and educational institutions derive business value through accessibility.

Free Computer/Electronics Accommodations Program (CAP) Training Seminar: Leading the Way with Accommodations, was held on January 30, 2008 in Albuquerque, NM.

Report issued on January 15, 2008 by the National Council on Disability (NCD) that examines employment, housing, education, transportation and other federal policies that affect people with disabilities.

Announced in February, 2001, the New Freedom Initiative is President George W. Bush's plan to tear down barriers to full integration into American life that remain for many of the 54 million Americans with disabilities. This report highlights the accomplishments of the Administration in implementing the President's vision and builds upon the reports issued in May 2002 and May 2004.

The Helen Keller National Center for Deaf-Blind Youth and Adults hosted its fifth technology professional's seminar for professionals on December 3-7, 2007, in New York. This is a seminar for professionals working in the deaf-blind field who wish to learn about providing technology training to deaf-blind consumers in their communities and about the latest on new technology for deaf-blind people.

The Center on Disabilities at California State University, Northridge is offered two assistive technology certificate training programs - October 1-4, 2007 in Hartford, CT and November 6-7, 2007 in Boulder, CO.

The Federal government's annual conference on Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1998, which requires Federal agencies to make their electronic and information technology accessible to people with disabilities, was October 31-November 1 at the Washington, DC Convention Center.

Assistive technology demonstrations were held at the TARGET Center in Washington, DC to celebrate this day.

The IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) held a half-day tutorial on Wearable Computers for People with Disabilities on October 11-13, 2007 in Boston, MA. Wearable computers are computers worn on the body to allow for multitasking.
