Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month (SAAPM)
Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month (SAAPM) is recognized in April by both civilian and military communities. The Department of Defense observes SAAPM by focusing on creating the appropriate culture to eliminate sexual assault and requiring a personal commitment from all Service members at every level. We all have a part in combating sexual assault and SAAPM offers an excellent opportunity to focus attention on our individual roles.
We all have a role in preventing sexual assault and localizing SAAPM activities is a great way to extend this message.

"Eliminate Sexual Assault: Know Your Part. Do Your Part."
The 2016 Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month (SAAPM) theme provides recommendations on what we all can do:
- Eliminate Sexual Assault: Every Service member, at every level in our military, must know, understand, and adhere to Service values and standards of behavior in order to eliminate sexual assault, and other inappropriate behavior.
- Know Your Part: Each member of our DoD community has a unique role in preventing and responding to sexual assault. We must recognize our part in stopping this crime starting with our own awareness and knowing when and where to intervene.
- Do Your Part: We have to act. If we see a crime or inappropriate behavior unfolding, we need to step in to prevent it. We each need to add our voice to the call to end this crime.

2009 Campaign Materials
"Our Strength is for Defending"
The 2009 SAAM theme, Our Strength is for Defending: Readiness=Respect focuses on the ability of every Service member to prevent sexual assault by taking an active role in looking out for the welfare of friends and co-workers. As leaders in the field, Sexual Assault Response Coordinators (SARCs), Victim Advocates (VAs) and commanders have the ability to educate and to encourage our Service members to be ready and act in situations where people may be in jeopardy. This is especially important when alcohol is involved. Creating an environment of mutual respect and assistance is key to prevention. As you plan your campaign, try to use this theme to complement your activities.

2008 Campaign Materials
"Prevent Sexual Assault: Ask! Act! Intervene!"
The Department of Defense (DoD) Sexual Assault Prevention and Response Office (SAPRO) developed the 2008 Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM) campaign to advance each Service's continued efforts in preventing sexual assault in the Military. To further support needs of each division, SAPRO has designed customizable Service-specific materials in order to garner increased awareness from your command and installation.
The 2008 SAAM theme, "Prevent Sexual Assault: Ask! Act! Intervene!" focuses on the ability of every Service member to prevent sexual assault by taking an active role in looking out for the welfare of friends and co-workers. Research shows that most people have difficulty identifying situations that require intervention. Even if someone knows there is a problem, studies show that no one is likely to act if others do not take the initiative to respond. As leaders in the field, SARCs, VAs and commanders have the ability to educate and to encourage our Service members to ask, act and intervene in situations where people may be in jeopardy. This is especially important when alcohol is involved. Taking a stance against potential perpetrators of sexual assault can make a difference. Creating an environment of mutual respect and assistance is key to prevention. As you plan your campaign, try to use this theme to complement your activities.

2007 Campaign Materials
"Stand Up Against Sexual Assault... Make a Difference"
The Department of Defense (DoD) Sexual Assault Prevention and Response Office (SAPRO) developed the 2007 Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM) campaign to advance each Service's continued efforts in preventing sexual assault in the Military. To further support needs of each division, SAPRO has designed customizable Service-specific materials in order to garner increased awareness from your command and installation.
The 2007 DoD SAAM theme, Stand Up Against Sexual Assault...Make a Difference, focuses on the ability of every Service member, especially leaders, to prevent sexual assault by building a climate of respect. Creating a supportive, confident environment where victims feel comfortable reporting their crime is imperative, and taking a stance against assailants can make a difference. As you plan your campaign, try to incorporate this theme in your activities.
SAPRO's Sexual Assault Awareness Month Package has been designed as a resource to support sexual assault prevention and education efforts. The package contains materials that can be reproduced and distributed to support local SAAM campaigns. Materials include:
