MARINE CORPS PURCHASES BLOUNT ISLAND FACILITY

In 1996 the Marine Corps began planning efforts to buy the Blount Island leased facility located at Jacksonville, FL, and home to the Blount Island Command.  Ownership of this multi-million dollar facility finally became a reality on 10 August 2004.  It is the premiere site for the Maritime Prepositioning Force's (MPF) peacetime mission and wartime capability to support massive logistics sustainment from the Continental United States (CONUS).  Blount Island is the maintenance site for all Maritime Prepositioning Ships (MPS) that are strategically located the world.  There are three MPS squadrons, and each squadron provides enough equipment and supplies to support approximately 14,000 Marines and Sailors for 30 days of sustained combat. The Maritime Prepositioning Force's capability to project power during a crisis anywhere in the world is essential in supporting crisis situations in the Third World and the global war on terrorism.  Blount Island will continue to play a vital role in the National Military Strategy as the site for maintenance operations of the MPF for years to come.

Mission Statement
The Real Estate Section (LFL-3) provides policy and central direction for real estate matters, land use and community planning, and encroachment control throughout the Marine Corps. These functions include all real estate transactions such as property disposals (including BRAC disposals), transfers, acquisitions, leases, and use agreements. The real estate section manages the Marine Corps' community planning efforts by coordinating with the Department of the Navy and local installation commanders to facilitate compatible land use planning through programs such as the Air Installation Compatible Use Zone (AICUZ), Range Air Installation Compatible Use Zone (RAICUZ), Joint Land Use Study (JLUS) and comprehensive base and regional master planning. The Real Estate section is the HQMC portal for Marine Corps encroachment control priorities, programs, policy, and resource implementation for its real property, including sustainable ranges.
