Lakeview is a moderately wealthy neighborhood of frame cottages and brink ranch houses, the value of which has have continued to increase since the 1960s. Seven schools and twelve churches of various denominations serve Lakeview. The pre-Katrina population of Lakeview was 25,897 about 26,000, comprising almost 6% of the City’s estimated population in 2005. There are only a few single, large employment bases within the District neighborhood, with the exception of the USDA Research Facility and Delgado Community College, but retail commercial services can be found in several clustered areas.
The Orleans Parish School Board has demolished the main building at Haynes Elementary School and will be demolishing the two annex buildings. The proposed plans include combining the main building and two annex buildings into one new building. The exact footprint of the new Haynes Elementary School is currently unknown but the facility will be located somewhere on the existing school site.
