Alternative Arrangements E-mail updates
The Gentilly district of New Orleans comprises nearly 9 square miles with over 40,000 residents before Katrina. Its population reflects the racial, economic, and other demographic diversity seen within the city as a whole. In the immediate aftermath, breaches in the city's levee system caused flooding in over 80 percent of Gentilly, with severe damage to properties in almost every neighborhood.
St. Frances Xavier Cabrini Church in the Gentilly District was damaged by Hurricane Katrina and its aftermath. Two schools located on the property were also damaged: St. Frances Xavier School and Redeemer-Seton School. Holy Cross School purchased the property containing the church and two schools and subsequently decided to demolish the buildings and build a new facility. The project is being considered under Alternative Arrangements because it involves environmental justice issues and would impact a building eligible for the National Register of Historic Places.
You can find additional project information as well as view the St. Frances Xavier Cabrini project on a map, using the Alternative Arrangements Mapping Application.
