Internet Connectivity - to support the improvement of network members’ connections to the Internet. Included is funding to purchase and install computer equipment for a single work station and facilitate connection to the Internet. Internet connectivity support and training for inner city, rural, tribal and other community-based healthcare organizations will also be supported with this funding. (more…)

NIH MedlinePlus Magazine is a new quarterly publication which brings the latest and most authoritative information from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to patients and their families and to other health care consumers. Free PDF copies of each issue may be directly downloaded to a desktop computer from the web site or free mail subscriptions are available. Issues typically run about 30 pages, and many articles feature prominent links to the MedlinePlus web site for additional information. (more…)

Quite by accident, I bought a news reader for my portable device. I wanted to purchase database software for my PDA and ended up getting a good deal on a suite of four programs, one of which was a news reader. So I decided to try it out with RSS feeds of interest to medical librarians. (more…)

The National Library of Medicine has announced 18 five-year grants, totaling more than $75 million, for research training in biomedical informatics, the discipline that seeks to apply computer and communications technology to the field of health. Three programs are offered in the Pacific Southwest Region: at UCLA; the University of California, Irvine; and Stanford University. (more…)

In September, 2006, Nevada became the 18th MedlinePlus Go Local site with the debut of NevadaHealthNet.org, providing residents of the Silver State with a reliable, fast and user-friendly internet database to locate health information, as well as health services, providers, and other resources in their communities. There are about 2200 listings included in Nevada HealthNet, and the project team will continue to accept suggestions for additions or other changes to the database. Suggestions may be made with an online form available through the “Contact Us” link. Nevada joins Arizona as the second state in the NN/LM Pacific Southwest Region to successfully launch a Go Local site. (more…)

The Medical Library Association has declared October as National Medical Librarians Month. In honor of this event, the National Library of Medicine and your NN/LM Regional Network Office are celebrating the contributions of medical librarians in two ways — by providing a letter of recognition to hospital administrators and by promoting Network member outreach projects. As the November election approaches, we thought Network members would like to know about HealthVote.org, a resource for for health-related ballot measures in California.

HealthVote.org provides information and non-partisan analysis about California’s health-related ballot measure campaigns. Produced by the California HealthCare Foundation, in cooperation with the Center for Governmental Studies, this site has been providing information about health measures since 2004. This year, HealthVote.org is tracking Prop. 85: Waiting Period & Parental Notification and Prop. 86: Tobacco Tax. The site offers non-partisan campaign finance analysis along with independent reviews and spending estimates of television advertising. HealthVote.org also includes in-depth background information, official ballot summaries, news, editorials and statewide poll.

In addition to covering the November 7, 2006 election, HealthVote.org follows the progress of health propositions approved by voters since 2004 and provides information about the ballot process in California.
