Training & Technology Transfer ›› Online Training Courses

Training The National Interagency Fuels Technology Team (NIFTT) has created various courses related to the use of LANDFIRE data:

  • A LANDFIRE introductory course entitled LANDFIRE: Concepts, Data, and Methods,
  • A course specifically designed to introduce the participant to the 40 Fire Behavior Fuel Models, and
  • A course providing information on Fire Regime Condition Class (FRCC) concepts and a method for assessing FRCC on the landscape.

The first, LANDFIRE: Concepts, Data, and Methods, is sponsored by LANDFIRE and is designed to introduce participants to the LANDFIRE Project, LANDFIRE data products, and associated topics. Successful completion of this course will provide the participant with the basic knowledge to understand and apply LANDFIRE data in day-to-day work situations.

The Introduction to the 40 Fire Behavior Fuel Models course was designed by NIFTT to assist users in understanding and applying the FBFM40. This course provides the participant with an overview of the Scott and Burgan (2005) 40 Fire Behavior Fuel Models, discusses the resources available to assist in learning about these fire behavior fuel models, and explains the process for selecting the appropriate fuel model.

The FRCC course (sponsored by the National Interagency Fuels Coordination Group) introduces the participant to the theories and principles behind FRCC and also teaches the Standard Landscape Worksheet Method for assessing condition class on the landscape. Participants who successfully complete the course receive FRCC certification.

Note also that NIFTT is currently developing a course titled GIS Tools for Wildland Fire and Fuels Planning using LANDFIRE Data that will consist of multiple lessons - which can be taken separately - on the various tools available to assist users of LANDFIRE data. The Helpful Data Tools page of this website provides a brief overview of the tools currently available. The various lessons of this upcoming course will be implemented incrementally through 2009. Check back for information on the availability of these lessons.

All online trainings are hosted by the University of Idaho. Interested individuals can register for any of these trainings by clicking here. If you would like to learn more about these courses or have questions about registering, please contact the helpdesk.
