How to Participate ›› Fuel Workshops ›› FBFM Calibration Workshops

ParticpationAs part of quality assurance and quality control, LANDFIRE scientists are conducting workshops that allow expert users an opportunity to develop and critique fuel layers. Two kinds of workshops are held periodically to assist the LANDFIRE team in producing the highest quality fuel data possible. These workshops include fire behavior fuel model assignment workshops and fire behavior fuel model calibration workshops (below)...

Fire Behavior Fuel Model (FBFM) Calibration Workshops

The goal of these workshops is to evaluate the LANDFIRE FBFM layers that are created from the crosswalks developed in the FBFM assignment workshops; when gross errors in the fuel data are detected, the layers are modified or adjusted to better reflect local conditions. Workshop information will be posted to this page as it becomes available, so please check back.

LANDFIRE Fuel Data Review

  • Provides a critical "first pass" for determining the usability and efficacy of the LANDFIRE fuel data
  • Allows direct interaction between LANDFIRE scientists and fire/fuel managers
  • Provides opportunity to reevaluate assumptions and fire behavior fuel model rule sets
  • Allows for the fine-tuning of map products based on local knowledge
  • Highlights gross errors in the logic of the mapping process
  • Increases the visibility and understanding of LANDFIRE data products
  • Builds support for LANDFIRE products within the broader agency management and scientific communities

General Information

What will the workshops involve? In the workshops, hosted by the LANDFIRE fuel team and technology transfer group, participants will review fuel maps and help build crosswalks between LANDFIRE fuel beds (vegetative characteristics) and fire behavior models.
How will the feedback be used? In the workshops, hosted by the LANDFIRE fuel team and technology transfer group, participants will review fuel maps and make suggestions for improving the fire behavior fuel model maps based on local conditions.
Who should attend the workshops? Desired workshop participants include both agency and private sector employees with an integrated knowledge of fuels, fuel modeling systems, and fire behavior.
When and where are the workshops held? Dates and locations of LANDFIRE fuel workshops will be posted as determined. Please check back for information on fuel workshops to be held in your area.
