December 2003 Headlines:

A Holiday Message from Director John W. Gillis.

New funding is available for Services for Trafficking Victims (PDF 495 kb) to develop, expand, or strengthen programs serving victims of severe forms of human trafficking. GMS registration deadline: January 20, 2004. Application deadline: February 3, 2004.

OVC funds are now available for 20 public awareness grants to school- and community-based sites for youth victimization education campaigns. October-November 2003 Headlines:

Foreign Language Publications iconVictim-Related Foreign Language Publications are available to help you better serve non-English-speaking victims and their families. These documents also provide models for action in other countries.

New funding is available for 60 communities for Community Awareness Projects to support public education and outreach activities during the 2004 National Crime Victims' Rights Week (NCVRW). Application deadline is November 21, 2003.

OVC provides mini grants up to $5,000 to grassroots community-based victim organizations and coalitions to improve outreach and services to crime victims through its Helping Outreach Programs to Expand (HOPE) initiative.

July-August 2003 Headlines:

OVC funds are now available for 10 planning grants to rural law enforcement agencies for victim assistance initiatives. Applications through the National Sheriff's Association only. Contact Maggie Johnston at mjohnston@sheriffs.org, or call 703-836-7827. Applications due by August 15, 2003.

OVC's FY 2003 Competitive Discretionary Grant Program Solicitations are now available online. GMS registration deadline: July 1, 2003. Application deadline: July 9, 2003. (Note: International Conference on Victim Issues Canceled June 20, 2003.)

OVC's FY 2003 Discretionary Continuation Grant Guidelines also are available online. Note: Only grantees who received confirmation from OVC that continuation funding has been approved may apply. GMS registration deadline: July 22, 2003. Application deadline: August 7, 2003.

Register by July 31st for NOVA's 29th Annual North American Victim Assistance Conference, August 24-29 in New Orleans, Louisiana. (Scholarships are available for victims of crime.) Highlights also include OVC's Professional Development Institute.

June 2003 Headlines:

OVC funds are available for four state site grants for Crime Victim Legal Clinics. Applications to the National Crime Victims Law Institute, due July 15, 2003.

May 2003 Headlines:

New job opportunities at OVC are now available for two Social Science Program Specialist positions. Candidates may apply online; deadline 5/28/03.

The Economic Crime Summit will be held on May 4–7, 2003, in Washington, DC. This year's theme: Economic Crime and Terrorism: 2003 and Beyond.

April 2003 Headlines:

The Commerce Department announces up to $12.4 million for FY 2003 Technology Opportunities Program (TOP) Grants. Submit applications to TOP by April 23, 2003. Elegibility and requirements are explained in the TOP FAQs.

Help commemorate National Crime Victims' Rights Week (NCVRW), April 6–12 and joins us for these special events:

  • First national observance and candlelight ceremony to reaffirm promises to victims of crime, to be held at 6:30 p.m., April 10, at the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, DC. Encourage others to participate and help make this an annual event that will draw people from all over.
  • Victim Services Awards Ceremony at the Ronald Reagan International Trade Center in Washington, DC, at 7:45 p.m. on April 12. RSVP required due to limited seating. Contact 202-973-8715.

OVC will offer free copies of the Journal of Traumatic Stress special edition on child and adult crime victims in honor of National Crime Victims' Rights Week. Order from OVCRC (1-800-627-6872; TTY 1-877-712-9279).

March 2003 Headlines:

Apply for the 2003 National Victim Assistance Academy to be held June 8–13 in California and Kansas, and again June 22–27 in South Carolina.

February 2003 Headlines:

As part of the 2003 National Crime Victims' Rights Week April 6-12, please join the national observance and candlelight ceremony for victims of crime and those who serve them on April 10 in Washington, DC.

Funding News! Effective in FY 2003, OVC's funding plan and application kits will migrate to the Web to streamline the grant application process. Read more about this important change.

The 2003 National Victim Assistance Academy will be held June 8-13 at California State University-Fresno and Washburn University in Topeka, Kansas, and again June 22-27 at the Medical University of South Carolina (College of Charleston). National Crime Victims' Rights Week for 2003 will be celebrated April 6-12, during which time victim advocates will be honored with the National Crime Victims' Rights Week Awards. See previous efforts and award recipients.

Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) invites you to send a tribute to a loved one or friend affected by drunk driving. To learn more about how to support these victims or help prevent drunk driving, visit the National Drunk and Drugged Driving (3D) Prevention Month Coalition. OVC also offers resource links on drunk driving and related publications, including "Tips for Responding to Victims of Alcohol-Related Driving Crashes."

Reach Out To Victims in Indian Country (November)
November is Native American Heritage Month—and a good time to remember that OVC offers numerous resources that address the unique needs of victims in Indian Country. Learn how to prevent child abuse and improve the prosecution of sexual abuse cases, or search OVC's list of helpful organizations for assistance on other topics.

If you need help, call the hotline at 1-800-799-7233 (TTY 1-800-787-3224), or use OVC's domestic violence links to learn more. During Domestic Violence Awareness month this Oct., discover efforts from the Family Violence Prevention Fund to end abuse, from its public education campaigns to the Consensus Recommendations for Child and Adolescent Health workers.

National Day of Remembrance for Parents of Murdered Children (September 25)
The National Organization of Parents of Murdered Children (POMC) on September 25 will recognize all families who have violently lost a child. OVC also provides survivor resources for grieving friends and relatives.

Remembrance and Coping After Terrorism (September)
Though 2 years have passed, many still feel the effects of the September 11 terrorist attacks. OVC remembers this loss and offers survivors its Handbook for Coping After Terrorism. (Also available in Spanish.) For help with coping, especially during the second year anniversary, contact OVC's Terrorism Victim Hotline at 1-800-331-0075; 1-800-833-6885 (TTY).

Identity Theft and Other Fraud (August)
Learn how to minimize risk and respond to specific types of identity fraud in ID Theft: When Bad Things Happen to Your Good Name from the Federal Trade Commission. OVC also offers links to related organizations that provide information and assistance to victims and to publications about supporting victims of fraud.

Victim Assistance in Indian Country (July)
OVC provides numerous resources to meet the needs of victims and victim assistance providers in Indian Country. These include a schedule of upcoming district-specific training courses and fact sheets outlining training and technical assistance opportunities and a victim assistance discretionary grant program. Contact OVC TTAC about specific training dates.

Victim Assistance Academies (June)
The National Victim Assistance Academy offers training this month on victimology and victims' rights and services. The 2002 Academy textbook emphasizes new developments in victim assistance and special topics such as terrorism and rural victims. State-specific academies also are available. Contact OVC TTAC regarding technical assistance for state academies.

OVC Honors Law Enforcement (May)
In observance of National Police Week (May 11–17), OVC recognizes the critical role law enforcement officers play in responding to victims of crime and offers related resources. OVC also honors police survivors with links to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund, Inc., which offers event and related information and Web resources, and Concerns of Police Survivors, Inc.
