December 2005:

OVC Web Forum on Drunk Driving Guest Host Session (December 22, 2005 2-3 p.m. e.t.)Visit the OVC Web Forum on December 22 at 2:00 p.m. (eastern time) for a discussion on assisting victims of drunk driving. November 2005:

Visit the OVC Web Forum on November 30th at 2:00 p.m. (eastern time) for a discussion on helping victims of mass violence. This session will be hosted by Angela McCown, founding Victim Services Director for the Texas Department of Public Safety.

OVC Joins Grants.gov for FY 2006. This will affect applicants pursuing new discretionary grants, but not grantees applying for continuation funding or formula grants.

OVC Director John W. Gillis announces FY 2006 funding considerations for improving crime victim services and supporting crime victims' rights. The OVC Program Priorities for FY 2006 are based on the tremendous response to OVC's call for concept papers and is contingent on available funding.

New funding opportunity: 2006 National Crime Victims' Rights Week Community Awareness Projects selected for funding will be reimbursed up to $5,000 for public awareness activities. Deadline: November 18, 2005.

Attorney General Alberto Gonzales delivered remarks at the National Center for Victims of Crime, June 21, 2005. Lafourche Parish, LA, Sheriff's Office will receive the first NSA Crime Victim Services Award, which is being funded by the Office for Victims of Crime and presented during the National Sheriff's Association (NSA) conference June 25-29, 2005, in Louisville, KY.

OVC is now accepting concept papers on national scope training and technical assistance initiatives and demonstration projects. Selected concepts may be chosen to receive funding in FY 2006. Examples of previously supported initiatives are showcased in the OVC Focus On Series. Apply by July 1, 2005, 5 p.m. ET.

April 2005:

In Memory of the 10th Anniversary of the Oklahoma City Bombing, OVC Director John W. Gillis delivered a special message honoring these victims during the National Crime Victims' Rights week ceremony, April 7, 2005.

OVC is offering one grant of up to $350,000 to develop videos and companion discussion guides on domestic violence and/or assault against older women. Register online on GMS by May 17, 2005; apply by May 31, 2005. Explore OVC's training videos and guides online for help.

Attorney General Alberto R. Gonzalez honored recipients of the 2005 National Crime Victims' Rights Week Awards during a special awards ceremony held April 8, 2005, in this Nation's capital. It is one of several Scheduled Events in Observance of National Crime Victims' Rights Week, April 10–16, 2005.

The field of crime victim assistance recently lost two pioneering heroes, Betty Jane Spencer and Ed Stout, both honored with awards for their service to victims of crime. Read the Tribute to Betty Jane Spencer and Ed Stout.

As part of its victims' rights awareness campaign, OVC launched crimevictims.gov. This site answers the call to action, "Get Help or Help Out," presented in the seven new OVC PSAs that began airing nationally in time for National Crime Victims' Rights Week (April 10–16, 2005).

The Office for Victims of Crime (OVC) is pleased to announce the OVC State Crime Victim/Survivor Scholarship Program for eligible agencies and organizations sponsoring state conferences that focus on enhancing victim services. The program provides agencies with funds to offer scholarships that help eligible victims/survivors attend their conferences.

OVC offers $35,000 grants to establish State Victim Assistance Academies (SVAAs) to educate and train professionals who routinely deal with crime victims. Register by April 14, 2005; Apply by May 5, 2005.

OVC has allocated up to $3.0 million for Helping Outreach Programs to Expand II. This new grant program helps fund subawards to small faith-based and/or community-based organizations serving victims of crime through one pass- through organization. Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) will launch "21 Turns 21: Lifesaving Milestones" tour on April 13, 2005, during National Crime Victims' Rights Week. Join MADD at the National Mall. See also MADD events and local observances of NCVRW 2005.

In order to better serve victims in the area of consumer fraud, OVC is working with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) to foster training, awareness, and coordinated outreach programs. Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) recently launched a 24-hour hotline to lend support to victims of drunk driving and their friends and family. You can call 1-877-MADD-HELP for emotional support, guidance, and referrals. This OVC directory (NCJ 206874) provides Americans who are working, traveling, and studying in other countries the eligibility criteria and contact information for 35 countries and territories (and Taiwan) that have crime victim compensation programs. Most offer financial assistance to Americans and other foreigners victimized by crime within their borders.

Guidelines for Working With Victims and Witnesses
The U.S. Department of Justice released the 2005 Attorney General Guidelines for working with crime victims and witnesses. The guidelines are based on federal victims' rights laws and Department of Justice policy, and include specific guidance for victims of trafficking and identity theft.

Addressing Secondary Traumatization and Compassion Fatigue (July 2005)
Vicarious traumatization may affect personal relationships, damage one's sense of self, or lead to alienation or behavioral manifestations. Learn how to define and address this condition through videos such as "When Helping Hurts: Sustaining Trauma Workers," available from Gifts From Within, and other resources. Questions on this topic will be addressed during the next Web Forum on Compassion Fatigue hosted by Viki Sharp.

May 2005:

National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund logoRespect. Honor. Remember. (May 2005)
On May 13, 2005, join the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund (NLEOMF) for a Candlelight Vigil to honor fallen officers. The event is followed by National Police Week (May 15-21) with its special tribute and educational events such as seminars on Concerns of Police Survivors.

OVC also recognizes the sacrifices of law enforcement and the critical role they play in responding to victims of crime.

This report presents historical information on amounts deposited into the Crime Victims Fund through various sources, how those deposits have been used, changes that have had an overall impact on Fund resources, and trends in revenues and expenditures that could result in severe reductions in current funding levels. It is available from the National Association of VOCA Assistance Administrators, which prepared the report.

To help protect consumers against this increasing crime, FTC created an identity theft Web page, which houses a wide range of information, links, and publications for consumers, businesses, and law enforcement officials.
