Shelton-Mason County Chamber of Commerce

Mason County Chamber of Commerce has opened a Visitor Information Center in the former location of the Olympic National Forest/Park Joint Information Center in Hoodsport- 1 block west of Highway 101 on State Route 119.  The visitor center provides information for the Olympic National Forest and Olympic National Park along with local business and Olympic Peninsula tourist information. Northwest Forest Passes, and Interagency Passes can be purchased at this location.

BIG CREEKCLOSED$10 PER NIGHT 25 campsites Secluded campsites in busy Lake Cushman area. Potable water available
Available: Vault toilet,hand-pump well, fire rings, tables, picnic shelter, 1.1 mile and 4.0 loop trails begin in the campground, pack out garbage. Located 9 miles from Hoodsport on SR 119, turn left at the T, campground is on the right.
Remarks: Potable water is available at the lower well. 

BROWN CREEK OPEN   $10 PER NIGHT 6 sites open.   Peaceful location near South Fork Skokomish River. 
Available: Fire rings, tables, nature trail, pack out garbage. Located 15 miles Northwest of Hwy 101 via the Skokomish Valley Road and FS Rds. 23/2353/2340. WATER Available
Remarks: Site 1-6 open year round. NO WATER available during winter season.

COHO OPEN $16 PER NIGHT  56 campsites (10 walk-in $12 per night) Boat ramp  Scenic Wynoochee Reservoir. Boat launch fee $5 per day or $5 per week-end for campers,. Day use vehicle charge $5. Trailer waste dump $3. Campground is operated by Wilderness Adventures, LLC under a FS special use permit.
Available: Flush toilets, piped water, fire rings, tables, trailer dump, garbage pickup, paved road in campground, boat ramp, lakeshore and interpretive trail. Tacoma Power Dam/River info: 1-888-502-8690. Remote area, the closest services in Montesano 35 mile away (including 15 miles of gravel road). Remarks: Use caution, log truck traffic on road from Montesano to Nat'l Forest Boundary. Reservoir Open for fishing June 1 to October 31(see WA fishing regulations).

DUNGENESS FORKSCLOSED $10 PER NIGHT 10 campsites Scenic Dungeness and Graywolf Rivers 
Available: Vault toilets, NO WATER available, fire rings, tables, pack out garbage. Located 11.5 miles south of Sequim on Forest Service Road 2880.
Remarks: Steep, narrow unpaved access road not recommended for trailers or motorhomes.

ELKHORN: CLOSED . – DOSEWALLIPS ACCESS ROAD IS WASHED OUT WITH TWO WASHOUTS.  2 MILES BEFORE IMPASSIBLE WASHOUT ROAD REQUIRES HIGH CLEARANCE VEHICLE/FOUR W/D.  1 MILE BEFORE CAMPGROUND. THERE IS NO DETOUR.  20 camping units Peaceful location on Dosewallips River
Available: Vault toilets, water, fire rings, tables, pack out garbage. Located 10 miles up the Dosewallips river road.
Remarks:  TWO MAJOR ROAD WASH OUTS 1 AND 2 MILES BEFORE CAMPGROUND. see note above. CAMPGROUND WILL BE CLOSED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE.. 

FALLSVIEW :CLOSED $10 PER NIGHT 30 campsites Above Big Quilcene River Canyon, waterfall, trails
Available: Vault toilets and porta potties, NO WATER available, fire rings, tables, trail to river, located 3 miles south of Quilcene on Highway 101.
Remarks: 21 ft. trailer size max. Some pull-through sites.

Available: Vault toilet, fire rings, tables, covered picnic shelter, stock unloading ramp, hitches for stock, pack out garbage. 15 miles Northwest of Hwy 101 via the Skokomish Valley Road and FS Rds. 23/2353 Remarks: Campers with stock only. NO WATER available.

LENA CREEK CLOSED  $10 PER NIGHT 16 campsites Scenic Hamma Hamma River.
Available: Vault toilet, hand pump well, fire rings, tables, pack out garbage. Located 8 miles from Hwy 101 on FS Rd. 25 near Lena Lake Trailhead.
Remarks: NO WATER available.

RAINBOW GROUP SITECLOSEDBY RESERVATION ONLY $50 PER NIGHT.    9 campsites Centrally located to many recreational activities. 
Available: Vault toilets, fire rings, tables, trail to river .
Remarks: For reservations call 360-765-2200. Sites are not large and are limited to tents and small recreational vehicles. Group reserves entire campground, up to 50 people.NO WATER available.

SEAL ROCK:CLOSED   $12 PER NIGHT 41 campsites On beautiful Hood Canal beach.
Available: Water, fire rings, tables, picnic area, beach- located 1 mile north of Brinnon
Remarks: Shellfish license required for oyster picking or clam digging and can obtained at the Brinnon General Store, two miles south of the campground. . 21 ft. trailer size maximum.

Remarks: Primitive-No facilities. Short steep trail from 2401 Road to Lake.

LENA LAKE Open Parking Fee Hamma Hamma Recreation Area
Available: Hike-in Access via Lena Lake Trail #810, no potable water. Backcountry camp, 28 campsites, composting toilet, fire ring.
Remarks: NW Forest Pass required for parking at trailhead. Must be purchased in advance.

OXBOW CLOSED to motorized vehicles. Hike-in  No Fee 14 miles NW of Hwy 101 off Skokomish Valley Rd to FS Rd. #23
Available: Vault toilets and fire rings
Remarks: Camping s in designated areas only. Gravel bar and river area closed to overnight camping vehicles.

PINE LAKE Open No Fee Upper South Fork Skokomish River Basin
Available: 3 mile hike-in, no facilities. Pack out all garbage.
Remarks: Wildlife gates closed October 1 to May 1. Road 2361-21 converted to trail - 3 mile hike.

SPIDER LAKE Open Eight miles west of Brown Creek Campground on Road #23.
Remarks: No facilities

WYNOOCHEE FALLS Open  No facilities.   Wynoochee Recreation Area off FS Road # 2270
Remarks: Short hike-in from road. Wildlife gates closed October 1 to May 1.

 

VIEWPOINTS / DAY USE

MT. WALKER VIEWPOINT OPEN  North and south viewpoints overlooking Olympics and Cascades.
Available : Vault toilets, picnic tables, parking area, two viewpoints (one handicapped accessible)

Caution:  Approximately 1.5 miles from Hwy 101 is a hole in the road.  It has been flagged off.  Please slow down and use caution.  7/30/08
Remarks 4 mile narrow, winding, unpaved road, not recommended for motorhomes or vehicles pulling trailers. Excellent views of the Cascade range including Mt. Rainier and Mt. Baker. Views of the Puget Sound area include Quilcene Bay, Hood Canal and Kitsap Peninsula and in the far distance Seattle. Olympic views include Mt. Constance, Mt. Townsend, Buckhorn

BEAR GULCH PICNIC AREA OPEN No Fee Access to Lake Cushman and the North Fork Skokomish River.
Available: Vault toilets, picnic tables, wayside interpretive sign.
Remarks: No overnight camping or fires.

INTERROREM PICNIC Open Duckabush Recreation Area
Available: 3 picnic tables, vault toilets, trailhead for Interrorem Interpretive Trail (Wheelchair accessible with assistance) and the Ranger Hole Trail. Potable water is available year round.
Remarks: Northwest Forest Pass or Golden Passport is required for parking at the trailhead.

LAKE CUSHMAN RECREATION AREA  OPEN
Available: Port-a-potties in the summer months
Remarks: Day Use Only No overnight camping or fires. Parking daily from 6 am to 10 a.m.

HISTORIC CABIN RENTALS

HAMMA HAMMA $60/NIGHT 6 people max. Tranquil location in Hamma Hamma Recreation Area Located 6 miles from Hwy 101 off FS Rd. 25. Paved road, four-wheel drive vehicle recommended during winter- access to the cabin may require snowshoes or skis. Chains, shovel and gravel also recommended.
Facilities: Historic Cabin built by the Civilian Conservation Corp in 1937. No electricity, No Water, No shower—only toilet. Two bedrooms, bathroom, kitchen, living room, propane heater, refrigerator, cook range, and lights. Propane is furnished. Vault toilet, fire ring, picnic table, pack out garbage.

LOUELLA CABIN Open $60 per night.  Peaceful rural setting on edge of National Forest. In winter months check on area road conditions. 
Available: Year round, NO water. Port-a-potty, electricity, heat, 2 bedrooms, kitchen, living room, furnished, bring personal items such as bedding, pillows, towels, etc.
Remarks: Reservations through www.Recreation.gov.  1-877-444-6777, 6 people maximum. Check in time 2:00 pm, checkout is 12:00 noon. Call 360-765-2200 for more information.

TRAILS

Trail users: please report any condition updates at any Olympic National Forest office or on our website under Important Information: Comments/ Suggestions.

What's New: The Interagency Passport (Annual, Senior & Access) are now accepted in National Forests where a day-use fee is charged to recreate. On the Olympic National Forest, they can now be used for trailhead parking. If you have a valid Golden Passport or Interagency Passport you do not need the Northwest Forest Pass. The Interagency Annual Passport costs $80 a year. The Interagency Senior Passport is $10 and limited to individuals 62 years of older.  The Interagency Access Passport is for those who have a permanent disability.  It is free with proof of permanent disability.

10 ESSENTIALS ARE NECESSARY! Map of area, compass, flashlight/with extra batteries, extra food, extra clothing, sunglasses, knife, matches in waterproof container, candle or fire starter, first aid kit.  Also needed are good boots, good raingear, a leak proof tent and wool or polypropylene clothes to stay warm and dry. Weather changes rapidly in the Olympic Mountains. Don't forget wool gloves and a hat.  Anytime can be Hypothermia Weather. I*Internet Link www.nwac.noaa.gov

BIG CREEK LOWER LOOP OPEN Trail #827 1.1 miles Campground Nature Trail.
Conditions:
Remarks: Winter months when the campground is closed, park outside of campground gate- please do not block the gate. A Northwest Forest Pass, Golden, or Interagency Passport is required for parking at this trailhead when the campground is open.

BIG CREEK UPPER LOOP   OPEN Trail #827.1 4.3-mile loop trail through Big Creek Basin.
Conditions: Upper Big Creek Loop Trail and upper bridges have been repaired by the Mt. Rose Trail Crew. The two Big Creek Bridges near the campground have been removed. Hikers may walk out to SR 119 walk 500 ft west towards Staircase and follow the orange diamonds to reach the trail, or they may ford Big Creek at the site of the lower campground bridge when water conditions are low. Use caution
Remarks: Connecting trail completed from Loop Trail to Lower Ellinor Trail OK to travel. Wonderful view of Lake Cushman from connecting trail at 1 mile. Hiker can travel from Big Creek Campground to Mt. Ellinor Summit 6.2 miles (see conditions for Mt. Ellinor Trail). During winter months, park outside of campground gate- please do not block the gate.   A Northwest Forest Pass, Golden, or Interagency Passport is required for parking at this trailhead when the campground is open.

BIG QUILCENE (LOWER )TRAIL #833 6.3 miles 1,200 – 2,500 feet. 10-15% grade. FS Road 080 off of FS 27 road
Conditions: slides repaired and logged out so that it is now stock friendly.  
Remarks: Trailhead parking is small and may not have ample room for large horse trailers. Northwest Forest Pass,Golden, Interagency Pass is required to park at trailhead. Hang on rearview mirror or place on dashboard.

BIG QUILCENE TRAIL (UPPER) #833 5.3 miles 2,500 – 4,950 feet and 30% maximum grade. FS Road 2750
Conditions: Trail clear of trees.  A few down trees at summit, but trail is in good shape.  Reports of flowers in bloom.. 7/23/08
Remarks: Northwest Pass, Golden, or Interagency Passport is required at trailhead. Hang from rear view mirror or place on dashboard.

BROWN CREEK Trail #877 0.8 miles Beaver Pond Nature Trail-Interpretive Trail.
Conditions: No current access or trail conditions  8/7/2008
Remarks: Portion of trail nearest to 2340 road and hand pump well is wheelchair accessible.

BUCKHORN LAKE TRAIL #845 0.5 miles (access Tubal Cain Mine or Upper Big Quilcene Trails)5,300 - 5,500 feet. FS Road 2870
Conditions: Good shape.  It is requested if you go there for the night that you bring an extra garbage bag to pack out trash left by past campers- thank you!
Remarks: Trail can be accessed from Tubal Cain, Upper Big Quilcene Trails. Northwest Pass, Golden, or Interagency Pass is required at trailhead. Hang from rear view mirror or place on dashboard.

CHURCH CREEK Trail #871 3.5 miles Along Church Creek to Satsop Lakes.

Remarks: Wildlife gates closed October 1 to May 1. Parking pass not required.

CHURCH CREEK SHELTER Trail #870 0.7 miles Short trail to Church Creek Shelter.
Conditions:  Trail in excellent condition 7/30/08 Cleared by Mt. Rose Trail Crew.  Use caution fording Church Creek.
Remarks: Wildlife gates closed October 1 to May 1. Parking pass not required

COPPER CREEK TRAIL #876 miles 800 - 3,200 ft. FS road 2451 4.5 miles round trip includes loop at the ridge top.
Condition: The causeway bridge across the head of Lake Cushman is closed due to damaged from the Dec. 3, 2007 floods. Access to the trail is via the Shady Lane Trail and the Staircase Entrance to Olympic National Park (entrance fee and no dogs).7/30/08
Remarks: This trail is maintained by the volunteer Mt. Rose Trail Crew. 6 trees over trail.

DEER RIDGE TRAIL #846 3.6 miles 2,540 - 5,230 ft. 35 % grade FS road 2875
Condition:  Several small tree down towards top of trail.  Wildflowers blooming 7/11/08
Remarks: Overnight wilderness backcountry Olympic National Park Permits required. The 2875 road beyond Slab Camp Trailhead is due to be permanently closed with the work starting in August 2008.  The trailheads to Slab Camp and Deer Ridge Trails will remain open, with the exception of the period when trailhead improvement is being completed.  Check with ranger station for road status.

DRY CREEK Trail #872 8.2 miles 750’-3,700’ Trail goes from the lakeshore of Lake Cushman to the 2353-200 spur in the S.F. Skokomish Rec. Area. First 1.4 makes an excellent family day hike. The beginning of the trail crosses through private property, please stay on the trail.
Conditions: The causeway bridge across the head of Lake Cushman is closed due to damaged from the Dec. 3, 2007 floods. Access to the trail is via the Shady Lane Trail and the Staircase Entrance to Olympic National Park (entrance fee and no dogs).7/30/08  Trees across trail beyond 4.2 miles with one 4 foot log with steps cut into it at 1 and ¼ mile on the S.F. Skokomish side of trail. Easy for hikers to cross. Expect snow and ice during winter months.
Remarks: Dry Creek Bridge at 4.2 miles is missing (look for creek crossing when creek is low). Portion of 2353-200 road was converted to trail 8/04 add 1 mile to hike for total 8.2 miles Wildlife gates closed October 1 to May 1. Parking pass not required.

DRY CREEK EXTENSION Trail #872.1 2353-300 Road has been decommissioned and converted to trail. No access, refer to Dry Creek above.
Conditions: Wildlife gates closed October 1 to May 1. Expect snow and ice during winter months Parking pass not required.

DUCKABUSH Trail #803 6.7 mile 270'-1,750'-1,300. Good day hike to Big Hump 1,750' at 4 mi.
Conditions: Thanks to a WTA Backcountry Response Team some nice general trail maintenance, drainage work, construction of a nice piece of turnpike, and sawing out some blowdown. Trail is in nice shape to the top of Big Hump but there are several large pieces of blowdown between the top and 5 Mile Camp.5/22/08

Remarks:   Trail is very difficult for stock due to two slippery rock faces.  Not recommended for metal shoed hoofs.

Northwest Pass, Golden or Interagency Pass is required at trailhead

LOWER DUNGENESS TRAIL #833 8.1 miles 2,500 – 6,000 feet. 10-20% grade FS Road 2870
Conditions: Trail reported free of snow.  A few trees on the trail.  7/11/08

Remarks:  No Pass required on Lower Dungeness

UPPER DUNGENESS TRAIL #: 833.2 8.1 miles 10-15% grade

Conditions: Trail is excellent for 2.5 miles At 2.5 miles up the trail the only way to continue to to Camp Handy is to ford the river.  When river conditions are high and swift from snow melt, it is not recommended to ford. Contract award to repair foot bridge has been postponed.   Approx. 1.5 miles past Camp Handy, the trees blocking the trail for stock have been removed.  Trail is clear for stock from Tubal Cain through to the Upper Dungeness.9/11/08


Remarks: Northwest Forest Pass, Golden, or Interagency Pass is required to park at the upper trailhead. Hang on rearview mirror or place on dashboard.

ELK LAKE Trail #805 1.1 miles- Old growth along trail. -Jefferson Creek Bridge was removed due to unsafe condition. Can make a 4 mile loop by hiking on 2401 road if seasonal Jefferson Creek at former bridge location is dry.
Conditions: Good condition. Maintained by Mt. Rose Trail Crew  7/30/08
Remarks: Please practice “Leave no Trace” 

FALLSVIEW CANYON TRAIL #868 1.0 miles 400-200 feet. 10-20% grade Highway 101
Conditions: Short steep trail to river.
Remarks: Hikers only, Northwest Forest Pass is NOT REQUIRED. During off-season months when the campground  is closed, park at gate and walk left loop to picnic area. Brushed by Tacoma Urban League

FALLSVIEW LOOP TRAIL #848 0.1 mile Trail is level. .
Conditions: Widened and leveled by Tacoma Urban League. 
Remarks: Short trail accesses waterfalls viewpoint. Northwest Forest Pass is not required. During off-season months when the campground  is closed, park at gate and walk left loop to picnic area.

GOLD CREEK TRAIL #830 6.3 miles 1,220 - 2,860 feet. 20% grade. FS Road 2870-230
Conditions: Can now get to the trailhead.  Large area of blow down near Trailhead cleared by chainsaws. Additional 2 blow downs in that area that hikers can pass under.  Rest of trail is relatively free of obstructions, except 4 downed trees which hikers can pass over or under.

Parking Pass not required.

GRAYWOLF TRAIL #834  4.2 miles 1,250-2,000 feet. 0-15% grad
Conditions: Trail has been cleared, brushed and tread work completed to Cliff Camp and Divide Camp (4 miles), just below site of former footbridge thanks to the Pacific NW Trails Assoc., Gray Wolf Trail Crew and Kit's Llamas. 8/8/2008.  Trailhead was moved in 2002.  Located 1 mile west of old trailhead on the 2870 road. Trail ends at former bridge crossing of the Gray Wolf River at 4.2 miles.

Remarks: Closed to stock.  Upper portion of Gray Wolf Trail can be accessed via the Slab Camp Trail, and the new Slab Camp Bridge.  Parking Pass is not required.

Graywolf Trail #834 2.8 (Upper)  Enter from Slab Camp Trail. 

Conditions:  Cleared of blow down, narrow slide areas OK for hikers, but not for stock.  Use caution.  Repairing of cribwalls in the slide area is scheduled for 2009.

HAMMA HAMMA BEAVER POND Trail #815 0.03 rustic nature trail around pond. Bench overlooking pond for wildlife viewing.
Conditions:  Good - Mt. Rose Trail Crew is improving trail tread.   See FS Road 25 conditions for access.  7/11/08
Remarks: Parking Pass not required.

HEATHER BASIN TRAIL #863 3.8 miles 3,250 – 4,250 feet. FS Road 2870
Conditions:   The bridge crossing the Dungeness River at 2.5 miles has collapsed and is not recommended for crossing during high water. Trail is very primitive
Remarks: Access from Upper Dungeness Trailhead, Northwest Forest Pass, Golden, or Interagency Pass is required to park at trailhead. Hang on rearview mirror or place on dashboard. Alternate route on FS Road #2880.

HOME LAKE TRAIL #893 – FS Road 2870
Conditions: The bridge crossing the Dungeness River at 2.5 miles has collapsed, and is not recommended for crossing during high water. 
Remarks: OLYMPIC PARK OVERNIGHT PERMIT REQUIRED, CONTACT PARK SERVICE AT 360-565-3100. Northwest Forest Pass, Golden, or Interagency Pass is required to park at trailhead. Hang on rearview mirror or place on dashboard.

INTERROREM INTERPRETIVE TRAIL Trail #804 0.25-mile interpretive trail. Trail wheelchair accessible with assistance. Take a step back in time to the early 1900’s when Historic Interrorem Cabin was built and Forest Ranger Emery Finch brought his bride to live in the Duckabush Valley.
Conditions: Excellent short family hike.
Remarks: Handicap accessible trail. Interrorem Cabin is occupied by renters, please respect their privacy. www.reserveusa.com to make reservations.

JEFFERSON PASS Trail #800 1.1 miles 3,000’-3,850’ Trail ends in timber. Climbing route beyond trail is very steep, cliffy and dangerous, requiring climbing gear, knowledge, and experience using climbing gear.
Conditions: Good Maintained by Mt. Rose Trail Crew.  7/30/08

JEFFERSON RIDGE Trail #808 1.6 miles 2,300 - 3,832’ Trail offers a view of the Olympic Mountains, Hood Canal, Mt. Rainier, and Cascade Mountains.
Conditions: FS 2421 is very rugged and 4 wheel drive, high clearance vehicle good tires recommended.  Trailhead difficult to find.  Upper trail is snow free with no fallen trees.  6/20/08. This is a steep trail that leads to the site of the former fire tower on Jefferson Ridge 3,900 ft elevation. The view is stunning! Please practice “Leave No Trace.” Expect snow and ice during winter months.

Remarks: Very steep, extremely rocky access road, sturdy tires recommended. Parking Pass not required

JUPITER RIDGE Trail #809(Mt. Jupiter)  OPEN until 9/30/08

Trail Notes: Several viewpoints overlooking the Duckabush Valley, viewing The Brothers and Mt. Jupiter. The trail enters The Brothers Wilderness at 5.6 miles, 3,950’elevation. Beyond the Wilderness Boundary the trees thin and fantastic views open up of the Olympic Mountains and Puget Sound. NO OPEN FIRES ABOVE 3,500’ IN WILDERNESS
Conditions:   Gate is open.   Slash cleaned up on trail. 7/1/08 There is a new bulletin board at the trailhead thanks to Olympic Resources.  3 or 4 large blown down beyond slash.  Expect logs over the trail.   Last 1/2 mile of trail is starting to wash out, climb with caution. (7/11/08) 

Remarks: Recommend 3 liters of water per person through summer. Parking Pass not required.

LENA LAKE Trail #810 3.0 miles 650’-1,900’ A well maintained trail with moderate grade with long switchbacks. Excellent for family hike, or first time backpacking trip.
Conditions:  Trail open to lake. Clear of blowdown trees.

LITTLE QUILCENE TRAIL #835 4.1 miles 4,200 – 5,275 feet. 15-20% grade.FS Road 2820

LIVING LEGACY INTERPRETIVE Trail #802 1.5 mile Loop Trail begins in the Hamma Hamma Campground. Signs interpret the Civilian Conservation Corps work in the Hamma Hamma area in the 1930’s.
Remarks: Tread is rough on the wheelchair accessible section of trail 1st 1/4 mile due to flood damage. 7/30/08

MILDRED LAKES Trail #822 4.5 miles 1,800-3,900’ Extremely steep, difficult way trail. Trail provides access to Mt. Skokomish Wilderness.
Conditions: Trailhead is not accessible due to slide at MP 10; not sure it will be fixed this summer9/22/08. Road past Lena Lake TH at MP9 has a rough spot that some vehicles might be able to pass. Trail is a boot beaten path into the Mt. Skokomish Wilderness.  Backcountry skills and equipment recommended when hiking this trail  7/25/2008
Remarks: Campfires above 3,500’ are prohibited. Use “Leave no Trace” ethics. Bring a trowel to dig a “cat hole” for human wastes. Pack it in, Pack it out. Northwest Pass, Golden, Interagency Pass is required at trailhead.

MT ELLINOR Trail #812  Road to upper trailhead open. Trail well maintained along entire route to summit. The snow field is easily passable for those with proper clothing  and equipment; poles could help as well as waterproof boots. Wildflowers were in bloom & Mountain goats were seen. 7/26/08
Conditions:  Be prepared for mountain conditions and rapid weather changes.
Remarks: Check weather forecast- Carry 10 essentials. Bring lots of water, sunscreen, sunglasses and be prepared for being on a mountain summit and quickly changing weather conditions. See road condition report. Northwest Pass or Interagency Pass is required at trailhead

MT. ROSE Trail #814  OPEN  2.9 miles to summit via summit route, 6.4 round trip mileage. 800’-4,300’ Trail is in the Mt. Skokomish Wilderness. Peek-a-boo views of Lake Cushman, Prospect Ridge, Dow Mountain and Lightning Peak may be seen on ascent. Trail travels through quiet, old growth forest, and from ridge loop trail, views of Bear Gulch Valley, Mt. Ellinor, Mt. Washington, Mt. Pershing, and the distant Huckleberry drainage may be seen.
Conditions: The Mt. Rose Trail crosses an area burned in 2006 by the Bear Gulch 2 Fire.  Snags and partially burnt trees exist along the trail.  Use extreme caution in this area, and avoid use during windy or rainy conditions.  The fire burnt heavily over the trail at the top of the summit route and the trail may be difficult to follow for 1/4 mile.
Remarks: Route to the right (ridge route) is marked to the ridge with orange diamonds in the trees. Trail is extremely steep and is very hard on the legs coming down. Ice axe when snow is present, good hiking boots and the ten essentials are highly recommended. Parking pass is not required.

MT. TOWNSEND TRAIL #839 6.7 miles (from upper trailhead to summit is 4.1 miles) 2,850 – 5,250 feet. 20% grade. Upper FS Road 190, Lower FS Road 2760 off of FS Road 27
Conditions: Trail in good shape and snow free.
Remarks: Lower trailhead is on FS Road #2760 road and the upper trailhead is on FS #190 road.

Parking Pass is not required.

MT. WALKER TRAIL #894 2 miles 600 – 2,804 feet. 25% maximum grade.
Conditions: Trail in good shape.
During winter, road is closed at Hwy 101.  Must park at gate and walk additional 1/4 mile to trailhead. Parking Pass is not required

MT. WASHINGTON CLIMBING ROUTES Commonly used Route 1-A is a 4-5 hour climb from road to summit. Bring good boots, helmets, climbing rope, ice axe, crampons and 10 essentials.
Conditions: Check weather and avalanche forecast. Take 2419 road to start of climbing route (see road report for road conditions). Expect snow and ice during winter months.  
Remarks: This is a climbing route and there is no trail register.

MT. ZION TRAIL #836 1.8 miles 2,950 - 4,273 feet. 15-20% grade FS Road 28
Conditions: Trail in good condition.

Deadfall Trail - Trail has been made safer and hikeable of blow down trees.
Remarks: Restroom at trailhead parking area. Northwest Forest Pass, Golden Age, Golden Access, or Golden Eagle is required to park at trailhead. Hang on rearview mirror or place on dashboard.

MURHUT FALLS Trail #828 0.8 mile 800-1050’ Moderate hike to beautiful waterfall in Duckabush Rec. Area.

Conditions: Trail in excellent condition.  Maintained by Mt. Rose Trail Crew
Remarks: Protect the vegetation and beauty, stay on trail at falls area. Please pack home all trash. Parking pass is not required.

NED HILL TRAIL #837 1.1 miles 20-30% grade. FS Road 2878

NOTCH PASS TRAIL #831 2.1 miles 800 – 2,400 feet. 10 to 15% grade. FS 010 off of Big Quilcene Road
Conditions:  Historical trail cleared by WTA.  Crosses the FS 27 road and intersects with the Lower Big Quilcene trail at the bridge above Bark Shanty camp 4.3 miles in.
Remarks: Very small parking area, parking pass is not required at this trailhead.

RAINBOW CANYON TRAIL #892 0.5 miles 600 - 440 feet. 20% maximum grade. Highway 101
Condition: No recent report. 
Remarks: Access via Rainbow Campground. Campground is reservation group site. Gate is locked, please park across the highway. Parking Pass is not required.

RANGER HOLE Trail #824 0.8 mile Good short day hike. Easy until last 500’, then steep descent to the river. Conditions:HAZARD WARNING: River contains swift water, rapids, and waterfalls.
Remarks:River is not floatable. Use extreme caution in or near the water. Northwest Pass, Golden, Interagency Pass is required at trailhead

PUTVIN TRAIL Trail #813 3.7 miles 1,530’-4,880’ Wilderness-Extremely steep way trail beyond 2.2 miles. Trail leads to Lake of the Angels (ONP) - STOVES ONLY above 3,500’elevation, bear canisters recommended at lake.
Conditions:  Washout on road about 2.5 miles before trailhead. You must walk to the trailhead. Trail is reported to be in good shape with no blowdowns or big washouts.  Always use caution on this trail which includes scrambling, and sometimes steep terrain.  Maintained trail ends at 2.2 miles. 

Remarks: This trail is not recommended for those with a fear of heights. Parking Pass is not required.

ROYAL CREEK TRAIL #832 6.0 miles (access Upper Dungeness Trailhead) 2800 – 5130 feet FS Road 2870

SILVER LAKES TRAIL #842 2.5 miles (access Mt. Townsend Trail) – 5,500 feet. – 5300’ 8-10% grade FS 2760 Lower, FS 190 Upper Mt. Townsend Trailhead
Conditions: Road to the trailhead is accessible; Trail still has blowdown; Lake is snow free. 8/13/08
Remarks: Trail starts 3 miles up Mt. Townsend Trail.  Parking Pass is not required.

SLAB CAMP TRAIL #838 3.1 miles 2,540 – 1,440 feet. 30% grade. FS 2875
Conditions:  Trail is cleared and in good shape.  Bridge crossing the Gray Wolf River to the Upper Gray Wolf Trail was completed October 2005. 
Remarks:  Enters Buckhorn Wilderness within 200 feet of the trailhead.  Wilderness regulations apply.  Parking Pass is not required.The 2875 road beyond Slab Camp Trailhead is due to be permanently closed with the work starting in August 2008.  The trailheads to Slab Camp and Deer Ridge Trails will remain open, with the exception of the period when trailhead improvement is being completed.  Check with ranger station for road status.

SOUTH FORK SKOKOMISH-LOWER Trail #873 10.9 miles 800-1,250’ Trail meanders through ancient forest as it parallels the South Fork Skokomish River.
Conditions: WTA www.wta.org and Washington Conservation Corps (youth crew) have cleared 8 miles of trail to the river crossing.  More blow down trees and washouts above Laney Camp.WTA weeklong vacation will work on this in early August.   

Remarks for STOCK:  Trail is closed to stock between LeBar Homestead milepost 2 and Camp Comfort milepost 4 due to bridges that are unsafe for stock, and mudholes..  At LeBar Homestead use 140 trail/road make a 4 mile loop from LeBar Horse Camp.   16 mile round trip From LeBar Horse Camp - Ride 2353 and 2355 road 4 miles to the 2355-100 trail to access SF Skokomish Trail at Camp Comfort- ride trail to river crossing at 8 miles.  7/30/08

Northwest Pass, Golden or Interagency Pass is required at trailhead   Forest Service -101 year anniversary of the Skokomish Trail  6/7/2008.

SOUTH FORK SKOKOMISH- UPPER Trail #873.1 5.0 miles 1,300-2,980 elevation.  This trail wanders through old growth forest and crosses the South Fork Skokomish River and other streams several times before reaching an old avalanche chute at approximately 1.8 miles. May be difficult for stock. Trail closed to stock at park boundary.
Conditions: Trail clear to the first foot bridge at approximately 1.2 mile. Upper SF Skokomish trail's second log bridge is washed out and river may be difficult or impossible to ford.  Use extreme caution 7/11/08
Remarks: Wildlife gates closed October 1 to May 1. River closed to fishing between Church Creek and Rule Creek (check WA State Fishing Regs). Trail becomes a way trail at the Park boundary, Six Ridge Trail was logged out 8/10/04.  Parking Pass is not required.

SPIDER LAKE # 879 1.9 Miles. This trail loops around Spider Lake through a lovely old-growth forest.
Conditions:  Trail is in good condition thanks to the Washington Conservation Corps.  7/11/08    Excellent hike old growth hike.
Remarks:  Parking pass is not required. Lake and trail may be hard to find. The lake is sits between FS Roads 2356 and 2350. If you see the 2350 road, you are too far west.  Best trail access is from the northeast corner of the lake. 

SPOON CREEK FALLS Trail #885 0.3 mile Trail and and viewpoint of picturesque Spoon Creek Waterfall has been improved by the Mt. Rose Trail Crew. The trail ends before the creek.

Conditions:  No current report.  7/11/08

Remarks:  Use caution going beyond the trail to the base of the falls. Remarks: Short, but steep. Parking pass is not required.

THE BROTHERS Trail #821 3.0 miles 1,800-3,100 elevation Wilderness - lush green moss covered valley.
Conditions:  2 feet of snow up to the mountain. Reported that climbers made it to 500 feet of the top.  5/13/08    Tread washouts, use caution. Trail may be difficult to travel during high water. Remarks: Oh Brother Fire area from 1999 is unstable and climbers of the Brothers Peak are advised to stay to route 1 up the South Peak and avoid all other routes. Snow free to base camp.

THE BROTHERS CLIMBING ROUTE 3,100’-6,866’ Wilderness - Helmets, Ice Axe, crampons and rope recommended for climb.
Conditions: Recent report that Lots of loose rock, helmets needed. Ice axes recommended year round either for snow, or to help stabilize yourself in the rock scree. Check weather and avalanche forecast

Conditions: Clear of trees, some tread restored and slippery rock step area reshaped for better tread by WTA.  Trail clear to Copper Creek and the campsite at the mine area.

Trail is in good shape on the eastside.  Westside has lots of down trees between miles 4 and 5 north of Coho Campground.  Westside near Trout creek is difficult to travel due to slides and overgrown trail.  Trout Creek Trail Bridge is out.  Parking pass not required.
Conditions: Trail cleared of blown down tree 2.5 miles from Coho Campground on both the east and west side of the Lake.  9/30/08

From the 2401 Road junction there is a slide at MP 1.0.  Recent road work improved travel, narrow spots still exist. Not recommended for passenger cars due to debris from limbs and trees in or near roads.
Remarks: North end is not recommended for travel.

FS Road #2451 Four Stream Road.  CLOSED
Conditions :Unknown - Causeway Bridge over head of Lake Cushman closed due to damage from Dec 7, 2007 flood. 6/2/2008
Remarks: Wildlife Seasonal Gate remains Closed, MP 2.1. No Motorized traffic behind gate, except limited administrative. Reason: In partnership with Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife to reduce disturbance and increase escapement for big game during critical periods.

FS Road #2451-100 Four Stream CLOSED
Conditions: Wildlife gates closed October 1 to May 1. Rocky and narrow in places, high clearance vehicle recommended.  Road has not been maintained for 2007 season.
Remarks: Rough narrow roadway, water bars. Loose rock above road before wildlife gate, use caution.

FS Road #25 Hamma Hamma River Road OPEN/CLOSED  Paved road for 8 miles.  Road is not recommended for travel from the Lena Creek Bridge just past the Lena Lake Trail head due to very rough roadway.  The road is Closed 2.5 miles beyond the Lena Crk Bridge. Cannot access Mildred Lakes or Putvin Trailheads. 9/22/08

Remarks: The Hamma Hamma Road is a two-lane paved road for 8 miles to the Lena Creek Bridge.

FS Road #2610 Dosewallips CLOSED at 10 miles
Conditions: Expect snow and ice during winter months. Road is closed at 10 miles due to road washout which is 1 mile before Elkhorn Campground.  Case Creek culvert at M.P.8.1 IS very rough  4X4 high clearance vehicles are going beyond Case Creek.
Remarks: Road will be closed for an extended period of time. No vehicle access to Elkhorn and Dosewallips National Park Campgrounds, or Lake Constance and Dosewallips trails. Foot bypass. Remarks: Road closed at 10 miles.

CABIN RENTALS: Three historic cabins are available for overnight rental in Olympic National Forest. Hamma Hamma, Interrorem, and Louella Cabins may be reserved through the National Recreation Reservation System. Reservations can be made by calling toll-free 1-877-444-6777, or through the internet at www.recreation.gov. For additional information, call the Quilcene Office at 360-765-2200.

HUNTING AND FISHING SEASONS: Hunting and fishing regulations are set by Washington State Fish and Wildlife. For more info check http://wdfw.wa.gov

NORTHWEST FOREST PASS: The Golden Age, Access, or Eagle Pass Program has expanded to include sites requiring a Northwest Forest Pass (Golden Passports are available at ranger stations. Golden Eagle Passes may be purchased at www.natlforests.org or 1-877-465-2727). A Northwest Forest Pass is required year round for parking at most Olympic National Forest Trailheads. Daily passes are $5.00, annual passes (good for 12 months from date of issue) are $30.00 and are good in National Forests throughout Oregon and Washington where required, and in the North Cascade National Park. Northwest Forest passes may be purchased at National Forest Ranger Stations. In the Hoodsport Area, they are also available at the Hoodsport Shell Station, Hoodsport Visitor's Center, Lake Cushman Grocery, and the Eldon Store. Passes are also available at Verle's Marine Center in Shelton, Backpacker's Supply in Tacoma, Marmot Mountain Works in Bellevue, and Sportsman’s Warehouse in Silverdale. ROAD CLOSURES: SEASONAL Wildlife gates closed October 1 to May 1. Check with the ranger station for road conditions before traveling in the Forest. Please report any road damage to the nearest ranger station.
*** Do not cross road washouts, as you could get trapped behind the washout if the creek rises. Use caution driving forest roads. Check the weather forecast.

AUTO TOUR CLOSED. 9/22/08 The auto tours are self guided drives through the National Forest. An information booklet with map and cassette tape are provided free of charge. Drop boxes are located at the end of the tours to return packets. Tour A starts at the Quilcene Ranger Station and goes up Lords Lake Road, to Bon Jon Pass, past Mt. Zion trailhead and ends up near Sequim on the Palo Alto Road. Tour B starts at the Ranger Station goes up Lords Lake Road and turns north heading to Snow Creek area, takes several winding roads and eventually end up at the Highway at Blyn. Stop areas have numbered signs to follow. Stop #8 no longer exists.  Tapes are informational and educational about what the Forest Service is, and what some of are practices are. Auto Tour B is more historical with some old timers recanting the “olden days” in the forest.

SPECIAL FOREST PRODUCTS: Permits are required for removal of most forest products including firewood, plants, commercial mushrooms, and Christmas Trees. Check with the ranger station for permit information before removing material. Harvesting moss, floral greens, bear grass, stripping cedar bark, and bough cutting is prohibited. Permits for mushrooms and firewood are available by appointment. The Hood Canal Ranger District Quilcene Ranger Station is the only location to purchase special forest products permits on the east-side of Olympic National Forest. STAIRCASE Campground:  OPEN Will close 10/31/08 for the season  Full services- flush toilets, potable water and garbage service, camping fee. Entrance fee charged year round $15 for 7 day entrance to Olympic National Park. Annual Passes are also available. Rapids Loop Trail is open, but the bridge one mile up trail has been removed due to damage from heavy snow pack. Wilderness fee is charged year round for overnight backcountry permits - $5 for the permit and $2 per night per person.

DOSEWALLIPS AREA: NO VEHICLE ACCESS – 100 YARDS OF THE DOSEWALLIPS ROAD AT APPROX. 10 MILES HAS BEEN WASHED AWAY- 5.5 from Ranger Station. Overland route around washout has been improved for stock and hikers, please use upland route, use caution. 11/1/2007  Expect the road to be closed for an extended period of time.

WASHINGTON STATE PARKS - HOOD CANAL AREA
Potlatch State Park... Campground and day use open year round. No reservations taken for camping - first come, first served. Group covered picnic area available for reservations through the park at 360-877-5361.
