Holidays Apart From Family: Coping with Increased Stress
Date/Time: November 17, 2011 at 1:00-2:30pm (EDT)
Purpose: Separation between family members during the holiday season often impact relationships. Military duty frequently requires prolonged absence of one or both parents. The timing of the separation can begin on special seasonal holidays, making the parting even more significant. Other aspects of separation can mean that traditional, memorable practices have to be adapted to meet special circumstances. Speakers will provide information about holiday stress for the family and the separated service member and share approaches to mitigate that stress.

Generational PTSD and Post-traumatic Growth
Date/Time: October 27, 2011 at 1:00-2:30pm (EDT)
Purpose: This webinar provides a historical overview of PTSD that has contributed to our present-day understanding of the diagnosis and the varied approaches to treat this disorder. We will also provide an update on the concept of intergenerational transmission of PTSD across families. Finally, we will explore the concept of post-traumatic growth and an outcome of PTSD. Resources to address PTSD within families will be provided. With each conflict of the 20th century, health care providers learn more about the effects of exposure to war trauma. Increasingly, new research and studies focus on what may cause the disorder and the external impact of this exposure on families and communities. This webinar will present historical perspective on how our understanding of the diagnosis of PTSD and its treatments have evolved, and how this progression has led to attempts to define a trans generational factor for the etiology of the disorder. Current limitations of research on intergenerational transmission, and the concept of post-traumatic growth as an outcome of the disorder will be defined. Resources for addressing the impact of PTSD within the family will be provided.

Post-traumatic Stress Disorder and Natural Disasters
Date/Time: Aug. 25, 2011, 1 to 2:30 p.m. (EDT)
Purpose: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) not only affects service members who experience traumatic events while deployed, it can also affect civilian communities, particularly in the aftermath of natural disasters like Hurricane Katrina, the earthquakes in Haiti and Japan, and the tornadoes that tore through the southern United States.
The knowledge gained through extensive study of PTSD in military populations has provided great insight into the disorder in civilian communities. This webinar will discuss the effects natural disasters have on individuals who live in communities devastated by natural disasters, ways to promote resilience, and mechanisms for coping.

Anatomical and Physiological Changes Secondary to PTSD
Date/Time: 23 June, 1300-1430
Description: The National Intrepid Center of Excellence (NICoE) began caring for service members coping with traumatic brain injury (TBI) and psychological health in October 2010. Dedicated to delivering hope, healing, discovery and learning, the facility is both "high-tech" and "high-touch," focused on interdisciplinary, holistic and family-centered care. This month, DCoE is partnering with the NICoE to look at co-occurrences of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and TBI within patient populations, and ongoing research to better understand the relationship between these conditions. Speakers will talk about the NICoE’s ground-breaking work related to the identification and understanding of the anatomical and physiological changes connected to PTSD and TBI.
Speakers:
Dr. Thomas DeGraba, NICoE deputy director
Capt. (Dr.) Robert Koffman, NICoE clinical operations deputy director

Operational Stress and In-theater Care
Date/Time: May 26, 2011 1-2:30pm (EDT)
Purpose: Combat and operational stress is the anticipated reaction of service members who have been exposed to stressful events. Reactions vary, but are usually emotional, intellectual, physical and/or behavioral in nature. Service members experiencing operational stress occasionally require in-theater care. This webinar will identify best practices for understanding and treating combat and operational stress, with special emphasis on in-theater care. Speakers will provide suggestions and techniques for care providers as well as for service members experiencing operational stress.
Supporting Military Children in School Settings
Date/Time: Apr. 28, 2011 1-2:30 p.m.
Purpose: Deployment affects our military service members individually and has a significant effect on their families, especially the children. From toddlers to teenagers, children may face difficult separations, strong emotions and note parental changes once the deployed family member returns. Children tend to express their feelings and demonstrate behavioral adjustment issues at school. This webinar will address systemic issues and will highlight collaborations between family and school personnel as they support children in school settings.

Date/Time:March 24, 2011 1-2:30 pm
Purpose: The webinar will provide an overview of the relationships between mild TBI and the co-occurring disorders commonly seen with mild TBI including: depression, pain, post-traumatic stress disorder and substance use disorder; how to assess and manage these complex patients; and present a newly-released tool intended to help the primary care provider with assessment and management.
Understanding and Overcoming Compassion Fatigue
Date/Time: February 24, 2011 1-2:30 pm
Purpose: It’s common for those who care for service members and veterans to embed themselves so deeply into meeting the needs of their patients that they neglect to care for themselves. Better known as ‘compassion fatigue’, this physical, emotional and spiritual exhaustion can be very disruptive to the lives of those who experience it. The webinar will discuss experiences, lessons learned and best practices associated with compassion fatigue from the perspective of a psychiatrist, a chaplain and a social worker/nurse.
