December 23, 2006Government Canyon SNAHoliday Hike — Be one of the first to enjoy Government Canyon's remote and rugged northeast Protected Habitat Area, which is closed seasonally for golden-cheeked warbler nesting. This is an all day hike and participants must be in good physical shape and able to hike around 12-13 miles over broken and rocky terrain with good portion of elevation gain and loss. Group size limited; dress in layers appropriate to the weather; carry at least three liters of water per person; bring snacks, lunch, sunscreen, hat and raingear; wear sturdy, well broken-in hiking shoes or boots and bring extra socks if needed. Featured Event February 8–10, 2007CanceledBig Bend Ranch SPLower Shutup Hike — Ride in a four-wheel-drive vehicle on a bumpy road to the inside of the Solitario, a collapsed volcano. Camp overnight and depart the following morning on a strenuous eight-mile hike through the Lower Shutup where you will see the oldest down to the youngest rock formations of the Solitario - a very scenic hike. This hike takes you over four stone bridges constructed by the CCC during the 1930s. Learn about the history of the canyon and view its beautiful scenery. Caution: trail has some steep areas.
