Archaeologist

The Archaeologist is responsible for making significant contributions to the Presidio Archaeology Program consisting of the following areas: Excavation & Analysis; Curation & Exhibition; Research & Publication; Site Preservation & Interpretation; Education & Outreach, and significant contributions to the execution of long-term strategic and annual archaeological goals. Much of the work involves conducting archaeological investigations and cultural resource management including monitoring ground disturbance in archaeologically sensitive areas for construction, maintenance, or remediation projects, and preparation of historic preservation documentation, compliance and background materials for clearances and permits. Extensive field work is required. Significant archaeological areas managed by the Presidio Trust include those from the Spanish Colonial period, such as El Presidio, the Mexican period El Polin settlement, the American Civil War Period Funston Officers’ Quarters, and the prehistoric shellmound SFR-6. Inventory and evaluation of these and 50+ archaeological areas of the National Historic Landmark District are in various stages of completion. Of these, El Presidio is of international significance and the focus of many program activities detailed in the draft El Presidio Archaeological Management Strategy: Levantar. Requires a graduate degree in anthropology with specialization in archaeology from an accredited university; five or more years’ experience in North American historical archaeology and/or prehistoric archaeology of California and the Bay Area, preference for experience with Spanish Colonial Sites and US Military sites and knowledge of the regional and temporal documentary record for San Francisco; in-depth knowledge of research standards, methods, and principles as applied to government cultural resources management and scholarly investigations; practical knowledge and experience with Sections 106 and 110 of National Historic Preservation Act, Archaeological Resources Protection Act, and Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act; ability to solve problems covering diverse archaeological resources management situations, to assist in the development of a variety of integrated management and operating plans, to design program schedules, including estimates of personnel, equipment, and materials, and to deal with diverse technical and administrative concerns; in-depth knowledge of principles and techniques associated with evaluating the significance and condition of archaeological resources; skill in oral and written communication; ability to collaborate with descendant groups and members of the public who recognize a cultural affinity to the Presidio’s archaeological resources; skill in the application of cross-platform digital media, GIS applications, and database software for archaeological site recordation.
