Gardener

Works on a crew maintaining designed landscapes, playgrounds, athletic fields, and concrete paving. Duties include maintaining trees, shrubs, ground cover, lawns, picnic areas, camp sites, restrooms, park furnishings, walks, and patios; prepares planting beds and lawn areas by grading, rototilling and incorporating soil amendments; plants trees and shrubs; seeds and lays sod lawns; applies fertilizer and compost; uses integrated pest control methods/procedures; applies pesticides as necessary; cultivates weeds and mulches planting areas; mows/edges lawns and grass areas; prunes shrubs and small trees; installs and maintains irrigation systems; makes repairs to concrete walks, curbs, driveways and patios; repairs and maintains park furnishings, playground facilities, athletic fields and landscape structures; operates landscape equipment and power tools including riding mowers, tractors, string line trimmers, backpack blowers, chainsaws, and hedge trimmers; picks up litter and trash, and cleans park restrooms; and maintains maintenance shops and storage yards. Full-time position with benefits. Minimum pay rate: $23.78 per hour.

Requires high school diploma or GED and two years of experience as a landscape laborer, gardener or related position; California Class III Driver License; and ability to regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, frequently lift up to 50 pounds, and occasionally lift up to 100 pounds. California Department of Pesticide Regulation Pest Control Applicators Certificate (Category B) is desirable.
