USADF Signs Grant with gROUP IN bURUNDI

Grant Designed to Work with Marginalized and Under-served Populations

WASHINGTON - March 10, 2009

WASHINGTON, D.C. – March 10, 2009 – The United States African Development Foundation (USADF) signed a grant today with a Burundi group that will assist marginalized populations, such as internally displaced persons, widows, orphans, single mothers, and repatriates from Tanzania, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Rwanda.  The grant will benefit the group Solidarite Burundaise pour Secourir les Volnerables en Afrique (SOBUSEVA), a community-based service association assisting vulnerable poor in Burundi.  The Association works in the Muyinga, Karusi, Kirundo, Bibanza, and Bujumbura Provinces.

Upon the grant signing, USADF Chairman Dr. John O. Agwunobi stated “USADF works with the most marginalized and under-served populations in Africa. This grant allows USADF to help alleviate poverty in one community.”

The $186,000 grant will be obligated over two and half years to SOBUSEVA. While in the past the association engaged in humanitarian aid distribution, funded rice, cassava, and maize projects, and provided training for members, SOBUSEVA’s current focus is to mobilize and reintegrate displaced persons, returning refugees, and orphans through income generating activities. USADF will specifically fund the of construction of milling and hulling machines, installing hullers and grinders, training, and paying for basic administrative and communication costs. Nearly 4,000 people will benefit from SOBUSEVA’s community focused activities.

USADF re-established programming in Burundi in 2008. Burundi’s current portfolio stands at four investment projects totaling nearly $1 million dollars.
