CIESIN Demographic Data Cartogram Service (DDCarto): Provided by Columbia University, includes information on Illinois.

Illinois Atlas: The Data & Mapping Services Division of the Center for Governmental Studies at Northern Illinois University created the IllinoisAtlas, which contains free downloadable maps of demographic and economic information for Illinois counties.

Illinois Statistical Abstract: A comprehensive compilation of economic, demographic, and social program data relating to Illinois and to political subdivisions (mostly counties but also MSAs) within the state. The most recent edition is 2003; earlier editions and a set of time-series tables are also on the Web site. The Census Bureau also publishes a guide to the most recent editions.

Illinois State Data Center Cooperative: Coordinates access to statistical resources for the state of Illinois and contains links to local and regional data centers.

Office of Social and Economic Trend Analysis: Office at Iowa State University, which "collects, analyzes, interprets, and disseminates information on social, economic, and demographic trends," is a well-organized site containing county-level data for states in the Midwestern region; information is most complete for Iowa but a selection of Census information for other Midwestern states, such as Illinois, is also easily accessible through this site.

Illinois health statistics: Published by the Illinois Department of Public Health.

IPLAN: The Illinois Department of Health's IPLAN data system provides access to essential indicators of public health, with data from many different sources, for counties and, in some cases, for communities. For selected indicators, the system identifies associated populations by age, race, ethnicity, and gender.

Kaiser Family Foundation Heath Facts: Provides health statistics on programs such as Medicaid.

Illinois State Board of Education: Publishes annual state aid entitlement statistics for all Illinois public schools. (These are used to calculate additional funding to offset the impact of poverty in school districts.)

Research Information Network for Women & Girls in Illinois: Contains links to national and state-specific databases on employment, income, poverty, and welfare and to print resources (University of Illinois at Chicago).

Annie E. Casey Foundation Kidscount CLIKS database: Provides county, city, and community level indicators of children's well-being by state. The site allows users to create specific tables and graphs for Illinois in many combinations and comparative formats; data were assembled through the national Kidscount Network, and the availability of particular indicators varies among states.

National Child Care Information Center: Provides demographic information about the children, families and child care in Illinois, as well as contact information for different state agencies involved in child care. The profiles also contain links to additional state and national resources.

University Research Centers and Institutes

The Center on Demography and Economics of Aging (CoA): University of Chicago provides academic demographic and economic research, often interdisciplinary, and dissemination of research-based information about the aging of the population.

Center for Human Potential and Public Policy (CHPPP): The CHPPP, at the Irving B. Harris Graduate School of Public Policy Studies at the University of Chicago, integrates research and policy perspectives on improving the health, welfare, and development of children, youth, and families, and is guided by three broad objectives: focusing on child education, health, and welfare in the context of economic disadvantage.

Center for State Policy and Leadership: This is a center at the University of Illinois – Springfield that helps to form effective public policy and educates citizens about public affairs. The Center publishes the Illinois Issues magazine, a source for Illinois politics and public policy.

Center for the Study of Race, Politics, and Culture: This Center, at the University of Chicago, is an interdisciplinary program dedicated to promoting engaged scholarship and debate around the topics of race and ethnicity.

Children and Family Research Center (CFRC): The CFRC is an independent research organization at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign that supports research that contributes to keeping children safe, assuring permanent homes for children, and supporting child and family well-being.

Institute of Government and Public Affairs: The Institute of Government and Public Affairs at the University of Illinois – Urbana Champaign conducts research that improves public policy and government performance.

Institute for Policy Research (IPR): The IPR, at Northwestern University, is an interdisciplinary public policy research institute that supports social science research on significant public policy issues.

National Opinion Research Center (NORC): NORC is a nonprofit corporation at the University of Chicago that conducts survey research in the public interest for government agencies, educational institutions, private foundations, nonprofit organizations, and private corporations.

The Population Research Center (PRC): PRC, at University of Chicago, provides academic demographic research, often interdisciplinary.
