Administration for Children and Families, Region 5: U.S. Department of Health and Human Services provides links to other sites, summary statistics, AFDC reports for Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio and Wisconsin.

Annie E. Casey Foundation Kidscount CLIKS Database: Provides county, city, and community level indicators of children's well-being. The site allows users to create specific tables and graphs in many combinations and comparative formats; data were assembled through the national Kidscount Network, and the availability of particular indicators varies among states. There is a range of information for all Midwestern states.

Cities and Metropolitan Areas

State of the Cities Data Systems: From the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development's Hud, is a user Web site that provides data and links for individual metropolitan areas, central cities, and suburbs in the Midwestern region.

Windows on Urban Poverty: Web site from the Bruton Center at the University of Texas at Dallas and the Brookings Institution, that allows users to select a city or metropolitan area in the Midwest, view the location of high-poverty tracts as determined through census data from 1970 to 2000, and observe growth and decline in such areas.

Demographic and Economic Data

Bureau of Economic Analysis State Data: Provides annual personal income information for each Midwestern state.

Bureau of Economic Analysis Regional Data: Provides annual personal income information for the Midwestern region.

Bureau of Justice Statistics: Provides crime and justice statistics from the U.S. Department of Justice for Midwestern states as well as selected large counties and metropolitan areas, as well as for states.

CIESIN Demographic Data Cartogram Service (DDCarto): Provided by Columbia University.

Employment data by state, county, and MSA: Provided by the U.S. Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics, this site includes information for all Midwestern states.

Office of Social and Economic Trend Analysis: Office at Iowa State University, which "collects, analyzes, interprets, and disseminates information on social, economic, and demographic trends," is a well-organized site containing county-level data for states in the Midwestern region; information is most complete for Iowa but a selection of Census information for other Midwestern states is also easily accessible through this site.

School District Demographics: Provided by the National Center for Education Statistics.

Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act (PRWORA), 1996 (.pdf version) ( text version): Overall summary of federal legislation, which also includes a summary of grant allocations for each Midwestern state beginning on page 78.

Policy Information Center (PIC): U.S. Department of Health and Human Services provides program evaluations about welfare reforms in the Midwest.

Economic Success Clearinghouse (formerly Welfare Information Network): Provides links to other articles about Midwestern states on other sites.

Welfare Reform Connection: Provides information about Midwestern state and federal actions and analyses of key welfare reform issues for states. The information is from the National Conference of State Legislatures.

Census Bureau's main Poverty page

Poverty Statistics: The number and percentage of people in poverty for every Midwestern county in 1999.

Small Area Estimates: Provides a limited range of estimates for selected statistics on poverty and income for Midwestern states, counties, and school districts.

American Factfinder: Provides basic population, housing, economic, and geographic information in the form of tables and maps, based on the 2000 Census, for the United States, including all Midwestern, counties, cities, towns, and American Indian reservations.

County and City Data Book: Contains data from the 2000 Census and from earlier estimates for all Midwestern states (for example, poverty statistics are for 1997, from the Small Area Estimates).

State and Metropolitan Area Data Book: (last edition 1997–98) contains basic demographic and economic data for Midwestern states.

Census 2000 Gateway

U.S. Historical Census Data Browser: This system provides selected state and county level variables from decennial censuses from 1790–1970 at present. Users can pick geographies and variables. Provided by ICPSR and University of Virginia Geospatial and Statistical Data Center.
