Video: Guidelines for Effective PowerPoint Presentations (3:15)

Essential Elements

PowerPoint should be used as a framework or guide to information. It can also accentuate a presentation by adding pictures, diagrams, audio or video, and animation. Here are a few guidelines to follow:

  • AVOID reading straight from the PowerPoint slides.
  • AVOID talking to your slides. Talk to your audience.
  • Good rule of thumb when using PowerPoint as part of an oral presentation:
    • Spend 30 seconds to one minute per slide.
    • Title font should be about 44; text font about 30.
    • No more than six bullets per slide.
    • No more than six words per bullet.

To keep the audience from getting bored during a presentation using PowerPoint, try:

  • using the PowerPoint at the end of the presentation as a summary.
  • walking around to keep the audience focused on you instead of the slide.
  • turning off PowerPoint from time to time to intersperse information.
  • incorporating other meeting formats when using PowerPoint. Ideas include:
    • Group activities, such as role play or discussion
    • Stretching exercises
    • Meet and greet exercises
    • Writing notes on the board
Quick Facts
  • PowerPoint can accentuate and guide a presentation.
  • Do not read or talk to the PowerPoint: talk to the audience.
  • Change presentation format to keep the audience interested.
  • Offer the PowerPoint at the end of the lecture.
