Essential Elements
PowerPoint should be used as a framework or guide to information. It can also accentuate a presentation by adding pictures, diagrams, audio or video, and animation. Here are a few guidelines to follow:
- AVOID reading straight from the PowerPoint slides.
- AVOID talking to your slides. Talk to your audience.
- Good rule of thumb when using PowerPoint as part of an oral presentation:
- Spend 30 seconds to one minute per slide.
- Title font should be about 44; text font about 30.
- No more than six bullets per slide.
- No more than six words per bullet.
To keep the audience from getting bored during a presentation using PowerPoint, try:
- using the PowerPoint at the end of the presentation as a summary.
- walking around to keep the audience focused on you instead of the slide.
- turning off PowerPoint from time to time to intersperse information.
- incorporating other meeting formats when using PowerPoint. Ideas include:
- Group activities, such as role play or discussion
- Stretching exercises
- Meet and greet exercises
- Writing notes on the board
