Title: EPA-CDC Workshop On State-of-the-Science for the Determination and Application of Dose-response Relationships in Microbial Risk Assessment
Date: April 21 - 23, 2009
Location: Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
Tom Harkin Global Communications Center
1600 Clifton Road, NE
Atlanta, GA 30333
Telephone: (404) 639-0830
Purpose: Focus: Technical and scientific issues relating to microbial risk assessment (MRA) dose-response relationships following an event or natural disaster.

Background: Reliable dose-response data are critical to assessing the health risks from exposure to microorganisms originating from a deliberate attack, natural disaster, or human error resulting in contamination of buildings, drinking water systems, outdoor areas, or food. However, dose-response data for Bacillus anthracis and other organisms of concern in the low-dose range are limited. To bridge these data gaps, advanced methods, animal studies, and other approaches are required to generate credible low-dose data to support the development of acceptable, cost-effective, and scientifically defensible response actions and cleanup goals for multiple microorganisms.

Approach: In a 2½-day technical workshop, noted experts in biological dose-response will compare current approaches in dose-response assessments for microorganisms. Information will be presented on advances in methods and criteria for modeling historical data and generating new dose-response data while adjusting for accompanying uncertainty. Reliability and credibility of novel approaches to the modeling of low-dose data and the outcomes of multiple exposures will be discussed. Participants also will compare and contrast the latest approaches to estimate low-dose infectivity levels.

There is no registration fee. There will be a one-time charge of $50.00, payable at the meeting, for box lunches and catered snacks for the 2½-day period.

Security: Security clearance is necessary for each person attending the workshop. Information for international attendees will take a minimum of 10 business days to process. After you register for the workshop, international attendees will be contacted regarding the required additional information for security clearance. If you are a U.S. citizen, the information that you provide during registration is all that is required. International attendees must have security clearance in advance, or they will not be allowed to enter the facility.

Purpose: EPA’s National Center for Environmental Research (NCER) and EPA Region 10 are partnering to hold a three-tiered meeting to share information about grant research on the ecosystem impacts of climate change. The grants are supported by EPA’s Global Change Research Program.
  1. Tier one will review the results of five global ecosystem grants that investigated the effects of climate change and other stressors on coral reef and tidal marsh structure and function as well as the consequences for the flow of ecosystem services provided by these systems.
  2. Tier two will review the progress of seven global ecosystem grants that seek to understand how and when nonlinear ecological changes, in response to climate change and variability, affect ecological systems and their associated services. The grants focus on linked terrestrial and aquatic systems. The Department of Energy and EPA were partners in soliciting these grants.
  3. Tier three will serve as the kickoff meeting for six new global ecosystem grants that will study the synergistic effects of climate change, land use, and invasive species and explore possible management scenarios surrounding these issues. The solicitation for these grants was advertised in partnership with the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

The meeting is open to the public.
