Minnesota State Profile and Resources
|
Minnesota was the thirty-second state to be admitted to the Union on May 11, 1858. The land area is 79,617 square miles. The total area is 89,943 square miles. You guessed it, 7326 square miles is water! There is a reason Minnesota is called the land of 10,000 lakes. The 2003 estimate of population is 5,059,375 people. Mean travel time to work twenty-one minutes. Origin of the word "Minnesota" is based on the Dakota Sioux Indian word for "sky-tinted water". The red or Norway pine (Pinus resinosa) became the official state tree in 1953. The state flower is the pink and white Lady's slipper (Cypridedium reginae). The state bird is the common loon (Gavia). Minnesota has many community colleges and universities, including the University of Minnesota Medical School and the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine. |
