North Dakota State Profile and Resources

Known as the Peace Garden State, North Dakota encompasses 68,976 square miles and has a population of 633,837. The Dakota Territory was organized in 1861 and the population grew as the railroads expanded their lines west. North Dakota became the 39th state to join the Union in 1889. Its largest cities are Fargo, Bismarck, Grand Forks and Minot. Agriculture remains the largest industry in the state with the production of canola, flaxseed, durum wheat, sunflowers, sugar beets, and edible beans. The state's coal and oil reserves are plentiful, and it also produces natural gas, lignite, clay, sand, and gravel. North Dakota boasts one of the smallest unemployment rates in the nation at around 4%. North Dakota is also becoming more ethnically diverse: 1.2% Hispanic/Latino, American Indian/Alaskan Native 4.9%, African American .6%, Asian .6%, White 92.4%. Many immigrants are being resettled in North Dakota so the diversity continues to increase There are 4 Indian Reservations in the state and 5 tribal colleges. The state has 11 state-funded universities and colleges. |
