Description

The goal of image-guided or -assisted surgery/therapy is to replace conventional indirect image guidance with direct image guidance based on integration of multiple types of image data. Such precise transfer of image information to patient procedures allows the least traumatic approach to a lesion and precise direction of the appropriate therapy with minimal damage to adjacent, normal tissue. While numerous components of an image-guided therapy/surgery program are now available, a fully integrated system does not exist. Not only do conventional radiation oncology and surgical opportunities exist at the NIH, but novel molecular and genetic therapies requiring accurate targeting are being pursued.

Accomplishments-to-Date

  • Evaluation of potential space within the operating room suites to accommodate equipment and computers completed in March, 1999
  • Evaluation of implementation of project in concert with construction of new CRC

FY2000 Goals

  • Begin renovations of the operating room to prepare for infrastructure needs, e.g., upgrading power supply to the operating room, creating space to accommodate computer equipment
  • Establish institute consensus with implementation and usage of image-guided surgery/therapy
  • Evaluate available technology and determine need for research and development to meet research goals
