Description

The Clinical Center allocates approximately 3% of its total CC operating budget to support independent clinical research conducted by CC investigators. In an effort to assure excellence in clinical research and to provide stewardship of the resources allotted for research, the Clinical Center reconstituted the organizationís Board of Scientific Counselors. This Board is charged with reviewing the quality, integrity, and utility of the independent research conducted by CC departments.

Accomplishments-to-Date

  • Developed a new charter for the reconstituted Board of Scientific Counselors
  • Developed objective criteria for review of programs
  • Selected a team of national experts as Board members
  • Established a process of rotation for Board membership
  • Established review schedule for department reviews every four years
  • Planned for and completed inaugural Board meeting and review in
    September 1998
  • Completed CC response to Board recommendations

FY2000 Goals

  • Complete Board of Scientific Counselor reviews of:
    • Critical Care Medicine (June 1999)
    • Imaging Sciences (December 1999)
    • Transfusion Medicine (June 2000)
  • Facilitate implementation of recommendations of the Board regarding specific research programs
