Recreation in the Mobile
District
YOUR SAFETY IS
OUR PRIORITY
FACT:
Drowning is
the second leading cause of accidental deaths in the United States.
FACT: The majority of visitors to Corps of
Engineers projects come to enjoy water-based recreation, be it
fishing, boating, or swimming.
FACT: The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers
is dedicated to providing the safest environment
possible for your recreation experience. |
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers
has
developed an extensive national
water safety program
as well as local community programs to educate visitors
about the importance of water safety.
Visit the online Education
Center for activities that can be used in classrooms,
science
fair projects or other educational environments. Children will enjoy:
ONLINE GAMES & ACTIVITIES FOR KIDS:
The Water Safety Adventures of
Corky,
Sinker, and Bobber the Water Safety Dog!
The Mobile District
is involved at
every project in
water safety education through classroom and community
programs and partnerships with local businesses to promote water safety awareness.
Classroom
and Community Programs:
Our Park Rangers
work in our local communities as well as on our
lakes and rivers to
spread the Corps'
water safety message. Rangers perform water safety demonstrations
in classrooms, communities and parks, and work with community businesses to
sponsor water safety promotions such as our
life jacket loaner program, ranger trading card programs and
"flotation citations" for children "caught" demonstrating good water safety
practices.
Each project has a Water
Safety Coordinator who manages the project's water safety
programs. Corps
project offices/visitor
centers,
in conjunction with local Coast Guard Auxiliary Stations and Power Squadrons,
often host safe boating demonstrations and boating certification courses in their
facilities. Contact the Water Safety Coordinator at your local Corps
Resource Office for information on upcoming programs and promotions or
to make arrangements for a ranger program for your classroom or community. Programs are available for all age groups.
Fun and Educational: Contests,
stickers, coloring books, whistles, posters, key chains, croakies, cozies,
Frisbees, t-shirts, water bottles, life jackets and more! are used at our
projects to help
reinforce the message about the importance of practicing water safety. We feel that safety awareness can be
part of the fun!
Business
Partnerships:
We welcome the opportunity to partner with,
and we actively
seek out, local businesses to help spread our water safety message.
Partnership involvement can be as simple as displaying water safety posters and brochures,
or providing prizes, coupons and discounts used to reward
children for good water safety practices. If you or your
business would like to be a part of these community programs, contact your local
Water Safety Coordinator.
