I-95 Woodrow Wilson Bridge, Virginia/Maryland/District of Columbia (Under Construction)

Proposed Wilson Bridge

Currently, the eight lanes of the Capital Beltway around Washington, DC narrows into 6 lanes at the Woodrow Wilson Bridge creating one of the worst bottlenecks in the country. The current traffic volume is burdened with seven hours of congestion daily and frequent several-mile backups. At least 1.3% ($58 Billion) of trucked GDP crossed the Bridge in 1993.

To maintain eight lanes across the Woodrow Wilson Bridge, the Maryland State Highway Administration, the Virginia Department of Transportation, and the District of Columbia Department of Transportation, in cooperation with the FHWA are replacing the existing 6-lane Woodrow Wilson Bridge with a new 12-lane double structure. Each structure will include four travel lanes, one merging/diverging lane, and one High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV)/express bus/rail transit lane (available when the connecting systems are in place). The project also includes reconstruction of four adjacent interchanges (Telegraph Road, US Route 1, I-295, and MD-210).
