All components in the MIC Program work in sync to achieve the two main objectives: to connect and decongest. It will provide connectivity between all forms of ground transportation available in the city, while decongesting the streets in and around the busy Miami International Airport (MIA). It will provide connectivity for residents and visitors of Miami-Dade County and the South Florida region, where none existed, between the transportation systems in the Palm Beaches, Fort Lauderdale, Miami, and the Florida Keys, as well as decongest the streets in and around the busy airport.

The new multimodal Miami Central Station will provide choices and connections for transportation customers between: Amtrak and regional rail systems; Greyhound and city buses; and shuttles and taxis. The facility will also provide seamless transfers for travelers in private passenger vehicles, bicycles and for pedestrians. Adjacent to it, the Rental Car Center will house all rental car companies previously found at MIA and several operating off-airport thereby removing an estimated 30% of the vehicular and shuttle traffic found at the airport terminals. An elevated light-rail, the MIA Mover will transport airport users to and from the Miami Central Station and MIA.

The Florida Department of Transportation and the Miami-Dade Aviation Department in cooperation with FHWA will construct these important projects. In addition, Miami-Dade County is developing the MIC-Earlington Heights Metrorail Extension bringing Metrorail service to MIA via the Miami Central Station.
