For years, this Northern Virginia interchange had been more than just a network of bridges and pavement - it had been a symbol of the frustrations of commuting. Too many cars trying to go in too many directions, without enough space or time to change lanes. Plus, Springfield, Virginia is growing. Changes were needed to keep up with growth.

To respond to this need, the Virginia Department of Transportation in cooperation with the FHWA reconstructed the I-95/I-395/I-495 and the I 95/Rout 644 interchanges, with direct ramp access and separation of local, through, and High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) traffic. The project included building more than 50 bridges and 24 lanes of widening I-95 between I-495 (Beltway) and Franconia Road.

The new Springfield Interchange is now designed to handle the more than 500,000 vehicles that are expected to pass through the area each day and more. In addition, the weaving and merging that contributed to an average of three accidents a day in the interchange area has been eliminated. The result is increased safety.
