Note: This bibliography expands and updates the previously published, Organic Farming and Marketing: Publications from USDA, 1997-2003. Citations are arranged by agency name, and then by publication date, earliest to most recent. Over the years, agency names have changed; publications published under the auspices of older agency entities are placed with their current agency counterpart. Many publications are cited with current Internet access information; each URL was verified as correct November 1, 2006. National Agricultural Library call numbers are included when available.

This compilation cites only documents published directly by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s primary agencies during the years 1977 through October 2006. The full range of published work by USDA scientists, analysts, advisors and other employees at stations throughout the world appears in many other publishing venues including peer-reviewed journals, research reports, newsletters, conference presentations, Web pages, bulletins and factsheets, databases and more. USDA funded projects and organizations also publish documents that appear in many guises and places.

In terms of subject, only publications pertinent to organic production, food and marketing are represented. There are many others that are relevant to organic systems that are not cited. In addition, this listing does not address the large body of research published before 1940 when reliance on synthetic fertilizers and pesticides in agriculture began to become widely adopted. Much of this historic information, which predates the common use of the term “organic agriculture,” is directly applicable to current organic systems. For information on other organic-related resources from USDA and elsewhere, or for information about accessing materials from the National Agricultural Library collection, contact the Alternative Farming Systems Information Center (AFSIC).
