 Alternative Agricultural Practices
 January 1985 - August 1992

Quick Bibliography SeriesBibliographies in the Quick Bibliography Series of the National
Agricultural Library, are intended primarily for
current awareness, and as the title of the series implies, are not
indepth exhaustive bibliographies on any given subject. However,
the citations are a substantial resource for recent investigations
on a given topic. They also serve the purpose of bringing the
literature of agriculture to the interested user who, in many
cases, could not access it by any other
means. The bibliographies are derived from computerized on-line
searches of the AGRICOLA data base. Timeliness of topic and
evidence of extensive interest are the selection criteria.

The author/searcher determines the purpose, length, and search
strategy of the Quick Bibliography. Information regarding
these is available upon request from the author/searcher.

Copies of this bibliography may be made or used for
distribution without prior approval. The inclusion or
omission of a particular publication or citation may not be
 construed as endorsement or disapproval.

To request a copy of a bibliography in this series, send the series

Abstract: An explanation is provided of why and how one group of
researchers in a Chinese village setting came to focus on what the
authors call biological recycle farming. An
explanation of applied agricultural research in China is
provided. One conclusion reached is that application of
research at the village level was largely successful because it was
founded on community development principles. Another conclusion is
that food production in very marginal Chinese villages can be
increased significantly. While the alternative approach discussed
cannot be exported wholesale to many other countries of the world,
the concepts are very useful for
 international economic and agricultural development.

Abstract: Serious risks of cancer and other chronic illnesses from
pesticide residues in our food remain despite 40 years of federal
regulation of these chemicals. The major sources of the gaps in
federal protection include: the continued use of risk-benefit
analysis to decide which pesticides to allow on the market; the
failure to set tolerance at safe levels; and the inability of
monitoring programs to prevent unsafe levels of residues from
reaching consumers. This report is a product of the first year of
the Food Forum Project, which is
implemented jointly by Public Voice for Food and Health Policy and
the League of Women Voters Education Fund. The report
examines federal and state regulation of pesticide use, the impact
of food markets on the adoption of safer pest-control methods, the
development of sustainable agricultural methods, and the need for
 enhanced citizen participation in the
 national policy process.

Abstract: The apparent conflict between what is
scientifically known and what is perceived concerning food
acceptability by consumers provides an interesting paradox. Some of
the leading international contributions concerned with organic
farming system food products are thus reviewed in the light of
consumer beliefs and attitudes. It is concluded that, in a market
economy, consumer opinion will gradually prevail and that
agricultural farming systems will have to adjust to more extensive
 lower input farming approaches.

Abstract: Analysts have described conflict between the
economically dominant industrial sector of society and the
environmental movement as representing competition between two
opposing worldviews or social paradigms. There appears to be a
similar schism developing in agriculture. The conventional
paradigm of large-scale, highly industrialized agriculture is being
challenged by an increasingly vocal alternative
agriculture movement which advocates major shifts toward a
more "ecologically sustainable agriculture." Some have
suggested that alternative agriculture represents a
fundamentally new paradigm for agriculture. This paper seeks to
clarify and synthesize the core beliefs and values
underlying these two approaches to agriculture into a
"conventional agriculture paradigm" and an "alternative
agriculture paradigm." The writings of six major proponents of
alternative agriculture are compared with those of six leading
proponents of conventional agriculture to document the major
components of the two agricultural paradigms. The two sets of
writings reveal dramatically divergent perspectives on a wide range
of agricultural issues. The competing paradigms can be synthesized
into six major dimensions: 1) centralization vs. decentralization,
 2) dependence vs. independence, 3)
competition vs. community, 4) domination of nature vs. harmony with
nature, 5) specialization vs. diversity, and 6)
exploitation vs. restraint. The emerging controversy over
"low-input, sustainable agriculture" (LISA) illustrates the
paradigmatic gulf between alternative and conventional
agriculture, as well as the pitfalls facing alternative
agriculturalists as they attempt to replace conventional
 agriculture as the dominant paradigm.

Abstract: A broad-range perspective on the content and
implications of nutrition education is presented. The
perspective stresses the importance of recognizing effects of food
choices on the food supply, global resources
(agricultural, economic, natural) and the long-term stability of
the food system, as well as on individual nutrition and
health. The term "sustainable diets" is proposed to describe
recommendations for food choices that support life and health
within natural system limits into the foreseeable future.
General suggestions are provided to help nutritionists
incorporate the sustainability concept into their teachings about
food choices. The following "Dietary Guidelines for
Americans" are discussed as a framework for addressing issues of
sustainability in dietary guidance: 1) Eat a variety of
foods, 2) Maintain ideal weight, 3) Avoid too much fat,
saturated fat, and cholesterol, 4) Eat foods with adequate
starch and fiber, 5) Avoid too much sugar, 6) Avoid too much
sodium, 7) Drink alcoholic beverages only in moderation.
Learning to view foods as more than just sources of nutrients may
guide consumers toward sustainable food choices. A shift to
sustainable diets would be an important first step in
widespread adoption of a sustainable agriculture policy that
promotes the conservation of natural resources and regional self-
reliance in food production and consumption.(aje)

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to describe an LP/IO model
for evaluating the economic impacts of alternative farm policies on
rural communities and demonstrate its capabilities by analyzing the
impacts of three farm policies on a rural
community in Texas. Results indicate that in the noncrop
sector, two groups of industries are most affected by farm
policy. The first group relates to production directly
(agricultural services, banking and credit, and nondurable
manufacturing) and the second group relates to households
(retail trade and services). Farm policies which reduce
production but increase net returns cause losses for the first
group while benefitting the second group. Both groups are made
worse off by farm policies which reduce agricultural
production and the value of output.

Abstract: The frequent assumption that there are relevant and
meaningful parallels between agriculture in the U.S. and in Less
Industrialized Countries (LICs) is critically examined. Based on
the results of a survey of LIC students enrolled in the College of
Agriculture at the University of Minnesota,
recommendations are made to more carefully focus the approach and
direction of LIC student eduction. We conclude that the education
and training of agriculturalists in U.S.
institutions of higher learning does not relate sufficiently to the
resource base and domestic needs of farming cultures in the LIC
countries. A case is made for the benefit of practical experience
through work with farmers whose practices and
applications accommodate and reflect the realities of low-
input farming practices in the LICs. Appropriate paralleled farming
systems in the U.S are typified as "organic,"
"biological," "regenerative," or "sustainable," and LIC
students could be given experience on these farms as a part of
 their degree program in school.

Abstract: Current debates and conflicts in agriculture appear to
reflect the competing perspectives of two increasingly
distinct camps of agricultural stakeholders: proponents of
"alternative agriculture" and proponents of "conventional
agriculture." Several analysts have argued that members of
these two camps hold fundamentally divergent paradigms of
agriculture, and thus, literally see the world quite
differently. The purpose of this paper is to describe an
 instrument-the Alternative-conventional Agriculture Paradigm Scale
(or ACAP Scale)-developed to measure the basic beliefs and values
assumed to constitute the two competing
perspectives in agriculture. Items designed to tap all of the major
dimensions identified in the alternative-conventional agriculture
debate were included in surveys of known groups of alternative and
conventional agriculturalists, as well as in a statewide survey of
 farmers. The items discriminate
significantly between the three samples (with the statewide farmer
sample taking the intermediate position), suggesting their validity
as measures of the elements of the competing agricultural
paradigms. The items also exhibit a high degree of internal
 consistency, indicating the appropriateness of
combining them into a single instrument to measure adherence to
alternative versus conventional agriculture. As expected, the known
groups provide more consistent responses than do the statewide
sample of farmers, presumably reflecting the greater ideological
coherence of social movement and interest group members. However,
 the alternative agriculturalists are far
more consistent than are the conventional agriculturalists, and
potential explanations for this finding are drawn from
 recent work on social movements.

Abstract: A number of researchers, extension specialists, and
state department of agriculture personnel have initiated
investigations of alternative enterprises in order to evaluate the
economic growth potential they offer an area. To obtain a better
perspective on the number and type of activities under
investigation in various southern states, open-ended
questionnaires were sent to 44 individuals in 14 Southern
states. This article reports on some findings obtained from this
survey. Approximately one-half of the 80 projects
identified by respondents were directed toward horticultural crop
commodity investigations while 19 of the total projects
 investigated aquacultural-related activities. Survey results
indicate that horticultural crop alternatives will continue to be
investigated and emphasized by personnel in southern land grant
institutions over the next several years.

Abstract: One of the major gaps in the empirical literature
comparing conventional and organic farmers is the degree to which
conventional farmers would prefer or can be motivated to use
reduced-input practices comparable to those of alternative
agriculturalists. This paper presents the results of a 1987 survey
of a random sample of New York farm operators and a
two-thirds sample of the membership list of the New York State
chapter of the Natural Organic Farmers Association (NOFA-NY). The
results show that while conventional farmers tend to have a lower
preference for reduced-input practices than do
 alternative agriculturalists (NOFA-NY members), conventional
farmers tend to prefer pest- and disease-resistant crop
 varieties, nonpurchased, on-farm-produced sources of
fertility, and nonchemical means of disease control over high-
input, chemically-based production practices. The largest
 differences between conventional and alternative
agriculturalists are with respect to preferences for weed
control practices. For six of the eight practices assessed,
operators of small farms (annual gross sales less than
$40,000) were intermediate in their preferences between
commercial-scale farmers (gross sales $40,000 or more) and
alternative agriculturalists. There was, however, virtually no
difference between conventional and organic farmers in their
tillage practice preferences; similar percentages of the NOFA
members and commercial-scale farmers preferred minimum tillage
practices, while the percentage of small farmers preferring to use
as few tillage operations as possible was lower than that of both
 commercial-scale and organic farmers. Differences
between cnventional and organic farmers in their production
practice preferences are far smaller than differences in their
 environmental orientations.

Abstract: Target-MOTAD was used to assess the risks and
returns of sustainable cotton crop rotations from Auburn
University's 92-year "Old Rotation." Study results analyze
rotations of continuous cotton, with and without winter
legumes; two years of cotton-winter legumes-corn, with and
without nitrogen fertilization; and three years of cotton-
winter legumes-corn and rye-soybeans double-cropped. Ten years of
observations on deviations from target income were used to identify
 optimal sustainable rotation(s). Study results
suggest that diversification in rotations, as well as in
crops, results in the least risk for a given level of target
 income.

Abstract: During the 1980s there was decentralization of the
concentrated marketing of fresh vegetables in Sweden. Field
production in regions north of the traditional, southernmost
province Scania (Skane) increased. The latter were marketed
alongside imports to the large-scale marketing system with the
flows of goods from south to north. This paper deals with
consumer aspects, the demand side of the market, as a
determinant of the expansion of production to new regions. In this
marketing system, organically grown products play an
increasingly important role. After an analysis of the
development of vegetable consumption during the 1980s, the
results of a study of consumer attitudes are presented. The results
show that one third of a sample of 530 interviewees said that they
 sometimes searched for organically grown
products. The motivations for buying were the absence of
'poison', or personal health reasons. More than half of the persons
claimed to be willing to pay more for organically
 grown products.
