Instructions for Becoming a Principal Investigator

At the current time, the Science Mission Directorate (SMD) is accepting allocations for the government fiscal year of 2007 for access to the new NCCS LNXI Custom Supersystem (Discover), the NCCS SGI 1152 Altix (Palm/Explore) and the NAS SGI Altix (Columbia). Submissions are accepted on a rolling basis and evaluated once a quarter.

To access e-Books for proposal submission, go to the following link: https://ebooks.reisys.com/submission.

Reporting Requirements for a Principal Investigator

Several brief reports are required from Principal Investigators over the course of the allocation year. Report formats and instructions will be made available at the e-Books Web-site where you can log in using the same username and password that you used to submit your proposal.

  • An Entry Quad chart, which gives general information about your research effort. Submitted material will be placed on a publicly accessible Web-site.
  • Three Quarterly Reports, which provide the opportunity to report status information directly to NASA Headquarters program officials and to raise issues about your research effort. Submitted material will not be made publicly available.
  • A Preliminary Annual Report, due in time to be used by NASA Headquarters in the decision process if your team proposes for an additional year of NCCS allocations. Submitted material will not be made publicly available.
  • A Final Annual Report, which highlights research completed using your allocation. Submitted material will be placed on a publicly accessible Web-site.

Instructions for Requesting an NCCS Userid

In order to request a userid on NCCS computing systems, new users must complete the NCCS User Administration Request process.

  • NCCS User Administration Request Form (Web Form)

The NCCS User Administration Request Form is used to add a new user to the NCCS user community. The link above will guide a user through this process. Some of the information requested may be obtained from the Principal Investigator of your Computational Project. This process results in a copy of the NCCS User Agreement, which must then be printed, signed and sent to the NCCS. Because signatures from NCCS forms must be on file, all forms must be received in order for a request to be processed. The USG will notify the user when the request has been completed.

New users who are foreign nationals are also required by NASA Procedures and Guidelines to complete the following forms in addition to the form above:

  • NASA Name Check Request Form
Note that the NASA Name Check Request Form (NASA Form 531):
    • MUST be typed. NASA Security will no longer accept handwritten forms.
    • MUST be mailed (postal mail) at all stages of transfer. NASA will only accept the original form. Faxed copies of forms will be rejected by NASA Security.

  • Federal Document (FD)-258 (Fingerprint Card)

If you are a foreign national requesting access to NCCS computing systems from within the United States, you must also submit FD-258. Contact the USG to have this card mailed to you, follow the instructions on the card to be fingerprinted by an appropriate authority, and return the card by postal mail to the USG. Foreign nationals requesting access from outside the United States are not required to submit FD-258.

Return the completed FD-258 and NASA Form 531 to the following address:

NASA Goddard Space Flight Center
NASA Center for Computational Sciences
User Services Group
Mailstop 606.2
Greenbelt, MD 20771 USA

The completed NCCS User Administrattion Request Form (but not the FD-258 and not the NASA Form 531) may also be faxed to:

301-286-1634

Requests are processed as quickly as possible; however, because requests are processed on a first-in, first-out basis, requests may take two or more working days to be completed. Foreign National requests may take longer, as they must first be processed by NASA Security. Users and PIs will be notified when their requests have been completed.

Questions, problems, comments, and suggestions concerning the USG may be directed to the address or fax number above or by telephone to:

301-286-9120

or by e-mail to:
