Feature Story
juniper meadow Western Juniper Management Field School
This summer OWEB has partnered with Hugh Barrett of CSR Natural Resource Consulting, Inc. to hold three sessions of the Western Juniper Management Field School. Each session provides training in the field near Burns, OR at the Eastern Oregon Agricultural Research Center. The Research Center presents the unique opportunity of its lands, facilities, and staff of field scientists as resources for the course. The agenda for the course incorporates the OWEB publication Western Juniper Management: A Field Guide and covers topics such as: rangeland health and ecological processes, watershed function, soil surveys and interpretations, plant identification, phases of woodland succession, pre-treatment inventory and post-treatment monitoring, and treatment alternatives addressing the recovery/repair of site function and productivity. The focus is on the management of western juniper but as the course progresses through the two and a half days, the material is presented in the context of the recovery of rangeland health and function. A session was held in July, early August and upcoming in September. For questions contact Ashley Seim, OWEB (503) 986-0186.
Monitoring & Reporting Program
OWEB is responsible for coordinating monitoring for the Oregon Plan for Salmon and Watersheds. Oregon Plan monitoring falls into distinct categories that include: baseline, compliance, status and trend, effectiveness, and validation monitoring. Through the complement of different types of monitoring efforts, Oregon is able to document watershed conditions, track changes in critical habitat and species over time, and evaluate the effectiveness of conservation and restoration efforts. This diversity of monitoring approaches is essential to understanding watershed health, tracking the success of projects, and setting restoration priorities.
