Builders and Buyers Handbooks for Improving New Home Efficiency, Comfort, and Durability in Five Climate Regions

The best practices handbooks help builders develop durable, comfortable homes that achieve 15% whole-house energy savings in five major United States climate regions. The handbooks contain chapters for every member of the builder's team—from managers to site planners to designers, site supervisors, the trades, and marketers. There is also a chapter to help homeowners select the best systems for their new home. The handbooks give details on how Building America's system design recommendations and process improvements can help all builders interested in re-engineering their home designs to achieve high performance. Volumes 1-5 are available online for the following climate regions: Vol-1 Hot-Humid Climates; Vol-2 Hot-Dry & Mixed-Dry Climates; Vol-3 Cold & Very Cold Climates (PDF 5.6 MB); Vol-4 Mixed-Humid Climates (PDF 5.9 MB); and Vol-5 Marine Climate Zone (PDF 5.5 MB). NAHB Green Home Building Guidelines

At the 2004 International Builders Show, the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB), with the assistance of the NAHB Research Center, released Model Green Home Building Guidelines, which would provide a practical nationally recognized baseline for determining minimum thresholds for resource-efficient, cost-effective home building. The NAHB Green Home Building Guidelines, created for mainstream homebuilders, are designed to Highlight the ways a mainstream home builder can effectively weave environmental solutions holistically into a new home and to provide a tool that local associations can use to create their own green home building program. EarthCraft HouseTM Integrates Building America Research to Achieve Higher Levels of Energy Savings

Energy savings in the Building America program are measures of success, so a recent project with the Southface Energy Institute's energy-efficient EarthCraft HouseTM program has piqued great interest. Using performance levels from the Building America program and consulting with Building America partner IBACOS (Integrated Building and Construction Solutions), the Southface Energy Institute will enhance its popular EarthCraft HouseTM program to build homes to a greater level of performance.
